(CNS): Acting Premier Rolston Anglin and Minister Isaac Rankine, who is the MP for East End, have offered support and condolences in video messages to the families and friends of the man and his granddaughter who died yesterday from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Both ministers said the tragedy has left the East End community grieving.
Anglin said there were “no words that can lessen the loss”, as he outlined the support that government agencies are offering. He said the relevant agencies are working closely and with great care so that the response is coordinated and those affected are supported.
“To every first responder, school counsellor, nurse, doctor, social worker, police officer and public servant who went towards the situation yesterday, I say thank you. You did this work for others on the hardest of days, and you carry it with you afterwards. We see you, and we are grateful,” he said.
Rankine, the minister for social development and the minister for youth, said he recognised the profound impact of the loss on the community, and that a cross-government response is ongoing.
“East End is more than the constituency I represent. It is my home, and its people are my family, friends and neighbours,” he said. “When tragedy strikes one of our families, the pain is felt throughout our entire community.”
He said that he and Anglin had visited the family as well as students at the East End Primary School to offer condolences in person. “I want to assure the public that the relevant government agencies are working together to safeguard the family and to provide the appropriate support to everyone affected by this tragedy.”
Early yesterday morning, first responders were called to a home in East End, where a family appeared to have been poisoned with carbon monoxide from a generator. They were all taken to hospital, where a 65-year-old man and his 7-year-old granddaughter were both pronounced dead. Two other children are recovering in hospital in a stable condition.
Anyone with information regarding the deaths of the individuals is asked to contact the
Major Incident Room at 649-2930.
