ULSAN — Tap water will be temporarily cut off in part of Sinjeong 5-dong in Ulsan's Nam-gu district from late on the 20th through the early hours of the following day. The measure is intended to inspect water flow in the supply network and pinpoint the cause of leaks.
The Ulsan Waterworks Headquarters said the suspension will affect part of Sinjeong 5-dong, known as Sinjeong Block 7, for about five hours, from 11:50 p.m. on the 20th until 5 a.m. on the 21st.
The work is part of a block isolation verification project the city is pursuing to improve the efficiency of its pipeline network management. The headquarters plans to close valves in sequence and analyze changes in water volume and pressure — a method known as step testing — to identify leak points and their causes.
Since May 2024, Ulsan has been conducting an intensive survey through May next year of 52 vulnerable blocks among its 123 water supply network blocks, targeting those with low water revenue rates or abnormal flow. The water revenue rate refers to the share of water supplied from treatment plants that is actually billed. Sinjeong Block 7, the area affected by this suspension, was designated for detailed inspection after its rate remained at about 73% even following a survey last year.
To minimize inconvenience, the headquarters has put up banners and distributed notices to households. The schedule is also being announced through the Ulsan city website and its chatbot, Muldong-i, and contingency measures including the supply of bottled tap water have been prepared for emergencies.
Residents in the affected area should store water for daily use before the work begins. Cloudy water may briefly flow from taps immediately after service resumes, so it is safer to let the water run for a while before use.
"This is unavoidable work to accurately identify the cause of leaks and improve our water supply management system," said Kim Dong-hoon, head of the Ulsan Waterworks Headquarters. "We ask for residents' understanding and cooperation regarding the inconvenience caused by the suspension."
