The main sessions of 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity have kicked off Monday 19 in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, and they will continue until October 30.
Participants will discuss the course of implementation of international commitments aimed at conserving nature, restoring ecosystems, as well as protecting endangered plants and animals.
One of the key topics of the meeting will be the first comprehensive assessment of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This document, adopted four years ago, envisages achieving 23 global targets by 2030, including conserving at least 30 percent of the planet’s land and sea areas.
Special attention will be paid to attracting financial resources for environmental initiatives, promoting private investment, and expanding international partnerships.
As a result of the Leaders' Summit on Biodiversity held on Friday, world leaders have adopted the Yerevan Declaration. It reaffirms countries’ political commitment to deepen international cooperation to restore ecosystems and protect nature.
