What to know about Northern Ireland Open 2026
Why is Mark Allen going viral on social media?
Snooker star Mark Allen is going viral after breaking down in an emotional TV interview at the 2026 Northern Ireland Open, revealing that he recently spend 10 weeks in a mental health clinic (before checking himself out to play in the Northern Ireland Open).
The 40-year-old Northern Irish cueist was visibly emotional following his 4–2 first-round defeat to close friend Jordan Brown on Tuesday, October 20. Speaking to TNT Sports presenter Rachel Casey, Allen admitted he was in a "bad place" and questioned whether he could continue playing the sport he has loved since childhood.
The interview became particularly emotional when Casey hugged him and offered words of encouragement.
Who was Alex Higgins?
Alex “Hurricane” Higgins was one of snooker's greatest entertainers, renowned for his fiery temperament and mercurial talent on the green baize. Born in Belfast on March 18, 1949, he became world champion at just 22 in 1972, before winning again in 1982, when he famously called for 'his baby'. His 69-point clearance against Jimmy White in the 1982 semi-final remains one of snooker's best breaks – particularly the 'banana' blue, where he whipped the cueball off the cushion and back down to the reds. Higgins also won two Masters titles and the 1983 UK Championship. Despite many personal struggles, he helped transform snooker into a major television sport in the 1980s. He died in Belfast in 2010, aged 61. The 2026 Northern Ireland Open trophy bears his name. His life story is recounted in the unauthorized biography, "The Hurricane: The Turbulent Life and Times of Alex Higgins" by Bill Borrows.
