A strange blue door becomes the gateway to repressed trauma
Before Backrooms, the final season of this horror anthology did creepypasta right

Slender Man. Jeff the Killer. Eyeless Jack. These names all have one thing in common. They are extremely popular creepypasta monsters that embody deep-seated fears. Analog horror like The Mandela Catalogue or The Backrooms were natural offshoots of internet creepypasta, proving this subgenre is more enduring than you might think. But a decade before The Backrooms set off a Hollywood creepypasta arms race, a forgotten Syfy anthology series adapted the internet's best scary stories into bingeable television.
Channel Zero embraced a wide gamut of horror tales, with each season focused on a different creepypasta, but season 4, "The Dream Door," is a particularly engrossing watch. Based on "Hidden Door," a short story written by Charlotte Bywater and originally published on the subreddit r/nosleep, this six-episode saga delves into the terror of eerie liminal spaces, while mixing in a marital drama that’s more sinister than it appears at first glance.
“The Dream Door” is a creepy descent into hell
Episode 1 of Channel Zero's fourth season opens with newlyweds Tom (Brandon Scott) and Jill (Maria Sten) moving into Tom’s childhood home. The couple appears to be blissful. However, things get tense once they discover a strange door in the basement that leads to another small blue door that can't be opened. Unrelated to the mysterious doors, Jill suspects Tom of infidelity as well due to his strange relationship with a woman named Sarah (played by horror legend Barbara Crampton).
Eventually, Jill is able to open the small blue door, which unleashes a murderous clown named Pretzel Jack, whose horrifying appearance is the stuff of nightmares. Apart from exceptional speed, strength, and stamina, Pretzel Jack is also resistant to standard weapons like guns and can wield household items like screwdrivers to overpower a fight. The prospect of an erratic contortionist clown is scary enough, but Pretzel Jack's backstory adds a surreal twist to this already disturbing story.
This Channel Zero season taps into the horrific recesses of the human mind
Pretzel Jack wasn’t born a monster. He is revealed to be Jill’s childhood guardian that she willed into existence like a tulpa, an autonomous being created purely through intense concentration, with roots in Tibetan mysticism. This realization is reinforced by the monster's design, which incorporates bizarre elements only a frightened child could dream up. Pretzel Jack also exhibits childlike naivety despite his repeated attempts to maim and kill.
Tulpa-like manifestations that reveal fundamental truths about a character aren’t a novel concept in horror. Pyramid Head is a manifestation of James Sunderland’s repressed guilt in Silent Hill 2, where the creature takes the form of a ruthless executioner throughout the game. Tulpas are also directly referenced in Twin Peaks: The Return, where the Black Lodge houses entities that are proxies or decoys of real-world individuals. The same concept is turned into a spine-chilling slow-burn in The Empty Man, which demonstrates the human mind’s terrifying ability to create something out of nothing.
“The Dream Door” explores trauma and repressed memory, not unlike James Wan’s Malignant, where pain becomes a literal entity whose only means to communicate is violence. Will Jill embrace this part of her or cut it out completely, like an outgrowth? “The Dream Door” takes its time to arrive at this conclusion, and this wacky, unsettling ride is more than worth your time.
Channel Zero: The Dream Door is streaming on AMC Plus.
