Western Kentucky can preserve some hope of challenging for the top Conference USA spots this season with a win away to Sam Houston on Wednesday. The Hilltoppers have overcome a tough start to the campaign and sit 2-3 overall, aiming to build on last week’s 34-13 victory over conference rival Missouri State.
After almost a month on the road, the Bearkats make their return to Texas at Boulder Stadium, where they sealed their only win of the year so far against Nicholls in Week 3. Second-year head coach Phil Longo has shown promise with his Air Raid offense despite a lack of results, with sophomore quarterback Landyn Locke finding six different targets in the end zone for 11 touchdowns on the season.
A 35-3 decimation at Liberty’s hands last week is bound to affect Sam Houston’s confidence; however, they lost 49-14 at Texas Tech a fortnight prior. Locke has three receivers in the 200-yard club already this year but needs more protection from an O-line that’s also seen him sacked 2.8 times on average per game.
Western Kentucky had a brutal opening run this season with back-to-back games against top-four opponents Georgia and Indiana, the reigning champion and new favorite to take the crown. Recent wins over Mercyhurst and Missouri State hold major promise, though, and a superior-looking defense could put the Hilltoppers out of Sam Houston’s range.
