Accused High Country killer applies for bail, claiming he has been attacked in jail

Accused High Country killer Greg Lynn wants to be freed on bail, claiming he has been subjected to attacks in custody and because he believes fellow inmates are police informers.

Mr Lynn, 60, stepped into the Victorian Supreme Court witness box today during his bail application.

In the hearing, he told Chief Justice Richard Niall he had been "shitbombed" in his cell by a fellow prisoner in 2024, while he was being held at the Melbourne Assessment Prison.

"He had an empty milk bottle which he'd filled with faeces and other disgusting material, bodily fluids, and he threw that," he said.

"Some of it went all over me. I had to go straight to my cell and rinse under the shower for a long, long time.

"It was a disgusting attack."

Accused tells court of attack by fellow prisoner

Mr Lynn also told the court of incidents in July this year at the Metropolitan Remand Centre, where he is currently being held.

He said a prisoner made threats towards him when he refused to be placed in a holding cell with the man.

"He was ready to explode. He was like Mount Vesuvius ready to erupt," Mr Lynn said.

"He mentioned that he'd killed people before and he'd kill again.

Mr Lynn said he denied the accusation and returned to his cell.

During another confrontation with the same person, Mr Lynn said he called the man a police informer.

The man responded by poking him in the chest and spitting at him, Mr Lynn said.

"I am the victim here. I am the target of this informant," Mr Lynn told the court.

Mr Lynn — dressed in a lavender shirt, tie and dark suit — was supported in court by his wife Melanie and eldest son Geordie Lynn.

The former Jetstar pilot wants to live with Geordie ahead of a trial in mid-2027, over the alleged murder of retiree Carol Clay at a remote Victorian campsite in 2020. Ms Clay’s companion Russell Hill also died at the campsite.

On Thursday, Mr Lynn’s barrister Dermot Dann said his client had been cleared of Mr Hill’s death, and should be given the “full benefit of the acquittal” at the upcoming trial.

Mr Lynn has always maintained his innocence, arguing he was not criminally responsible for what happened to the pair.

Having been in custody since 2021, Mr Lynn testified he was "hated" by fellow inmates at the Metropolitan Remand Centre, many of whom he had never met.

After the July altercation with the prisoner in the Deakin B protection unit, prisoners hurled "every insult" at him for about an hour, Mr Lynn said.

"What a worthless dog I was, I was going to be stabbed, I was going to be bashed," he said.

Corrections staff willing to relocate accused, court hears

Mr Lynn said he felt unsafe in the unit and with other protection unit options put forward by Corrections Victoria.

Mr Lynn also believed other prisoners were willing to provide false statements about him to police, the court heard.

"They would clearly lie about their own mother for a sentence discount," he said.

A Corrections Victoria manager, Anthony Calandro, said footage of the July incident was viewed and staff did not see any evidence of Mr Lynn being attacked. The complaint was reported to Victoria Police and the footage wiped, he said.

Mr Calandro said Corrections Victoria was willing to work with Mr Lynn to relocate him to another prison, but could not do so if he continued to accuse other prisoners of being informers.

Mr Lynn said conditions in one of the units he was held in were "draconian", resulting in 23-hour lockdowns each day.

While addressing Mr Lynn's proposed bail, the former pilot said a concern had been raised about his wife holding an airport security pass because of her job as a flight attendant.

"The concern is that I will steal Melanie's security pass and do something at the airport, I don't know what," he said.

"I would not pass as a tall, thin, blonde female.

"What would I do with the pass, steal an aeroplane? It's ridiculous."

In order to be freed on bail, Mr Lynn's lawyers must show the court there are exceptional circumstances that justify his release and that he does not pose an unacceptable risk to the community.

Mr Lynn's barrister, Dermot Dann KC, said the prosecution would not be alleging his client posed an unacceptable risk.

Among the compelling reasons for bail, Mr Dann cited the lengthy period Mr Lynn had spent on remand, solitary confinement conditions, and the support of his family.

Prosecutors are expected to address the court later today.
