KUALA LUMPUR: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has insisted that his most important job as a husband is to keep his wife, singer and actress Bella Astillah, happy.
His comments come amid ongoing public criticism over whether she is a suitable partner for him.
Addressing the issue, Syed Saddiq explained that standing up for Bella does not mean he plans to respond to every comment online.
He prefers to speak out whenever the right opportunity comes along.
The politician also pointed out that the criticism directed at Bella is nothing new, noting that she has faced similar scrutiny since last year.
"Of course, it's my responsibility as a husband. At the same time, I'm not stating anything untrue. That's a fact and the truth," he said.
"Although we sometimes choose to remain silent because we do not need to respond to everything, when I have the opportunity and a suitable platform, I will speak up. It is my duty as a husband to assist in any way I can," he said during their wedding reception at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) yesterday.
When asked if claims that Bella is not his equal hurt his feelings, Syed Saddiq said he does not take such comments personally.
His main priority is ensuring his wife feels happy and protected from online critics.
"I don't take it personally. But I also want to make sure my wife is happy. This is nothing new. It's been going on for months, since last year. I want to ensure I bring joy and happiness to my wife.
"Sometimes, a wife does not need to respond. There are times when remaining silent is the best response. But there are also moments when I must step forward myself to defend my wife," he said.
Syed Saddiq shared similar sentiments earlier in the evening during his reception speech, admitting that he feels he is the one who falls short when people compare their status.
"If we are talking about being equal, I'm the one who is not worthy to stand beside Bella. She's the ultimate green forest; she's the ultimate mother. I'm privileged to call her my wonderful wife," he said.
His heartwarming tribute drew thunderous applause from the 3,000 guests gathered to celebrate the couple's big day.
