Foreign nationals seeking opportunities to serve in a foreign military can apply to join the armed forces of several countries, although eligibility depends on nationality, immigration status, military experience and the recruitment programme available.
Countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Spain, the United States, Ukraine, Russia and New Zealand have provisions under which certain foreign nationals can serve in their armed forces. Israel also operates a special enlistment programme for eligible foreign volunteers.
However, the rules differ considerably. While some countries accept foreign applicants without requiring permanent residency, others restrict recruitment to citizens of selected countries, permanent residents or experienced military personnel.
For Nigerians considering military service abroad, understanding these differences is essential because being eligible to enlist does not automatically guarantee a visa, admission into the armed forces or permission to settle in the country.
Here are nine countries, alongside Israel’s special volunteer programme, where foreign nationals may be eligible to serve in the military.
1. France
France is among the best-known destinations for foreigners seeking to enlist in a foreign military through its French Foreign Legion.
The Legion, a branch of the French Army, recruits men of different nationalities and allows eligible foreign nationals to apply without first becoming French citizens.
According to the Legion’s official recruitment website, applicants must generally be older than 17 and younger than 40 when they report to a recruitment office. Candidates must also meet medical, physical and administrative requirements.
Applicants from outside the Schengen area must present a passport, although the Legion does not arrange visas or exit authorisation on behalf of recruits.
Unlike conventional recruitment into many national armed forces, the Foreign Legion has a specific recruitment system designed to accommodate foreign nationals.
2. United Kingdom
The United Kingdom recruits eligible foreign nationals into its armed forces, including the British Army, subject to nationality and recruitment rules.
Eligible applicants can include citizens of Commonwealth countries, a category that includes Nigeria, as well as Irish citizens and certain other groups.
The British Army has historically recruited Commonwealth citizens and operates the Brigade of Gurkhas, which recruits eligible Nepalese applicants.
However, Commonwealth citizenship alone does not guarantee admission. Recruitment availability, residency requirements, age limits, medical standards and the specific service or role can affect eligibility.
The UK Ministry of Defence has also operated limited recruitment arrangements for Commonwealth applicants in specialist roles. Consequently, prospective applicants should check whether applications are currently open before making travel plans.
3. Australia
Australia allows certain foreign nationals to apply to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
Under eligibility arrangements introduced in 2024 and expanded from 2025, eligible permanent residents from the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada can apply. Eligible New Zealand citizens living in Australia can also apply.
Applicants must satisfy additional requirements, including residency conditions, medical and physical standards, security checks and relevant citizenship rules.
Australia also has an overseas lateral-entry pathway for eligible personnel with previous military experience whose skills can be transferred to the Australian Defence Force.
This means Australia is not an unrestricted destination for anyone seeking to join a foreign military. Nationality, residency and previous service can determine whether an application is accepted.
4. Canada
Canada permits eligible permanent residents, as well as Canadian citizens, to apply to join the Canadian Armed Forces.
This creates a potential route for foreign nationals who have already obtained permanent residency in Canada.
However, applicants must satisfy the armed forces’ recruitment conditions. The official recruitment website specifies that permanent resident applicants must provide evidence of three years of physical presence in Canada.
Age, education, medical fitness, background checks and the requirements of the selected military occupation also apply.
Therefore, Nigerians hoping to enlist in Canada generally need to establish the required immigration status and meet the applicable recruitment conditions before they can join.
5. Spain
Spain allows certain foreign nationals to compete for places in its armed forces, particularly in enlisted soldier and sailor positions.
However, eligibility is restricted to citizens of specified countries rather than foreigners generally.
Spain’s 2026 recruitment documentation identifies eligible nationalities including Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela, alongside other listed countries.
Equatorial Guinea and several other Spanish-speaking countries are also included.
The number of places available to foreign applicants is limited, and candidates must satisfy age, education, criminal-record and other recruitment requirements.
Nigeria is not among the nationalities listed in Spain’s 2026 recruitment rules for these foreign-applicant places.
6. United States
The United States permits certain non-citizens to enlist in its military, but it does not generally offer ordinary enlistment to foreign nationals living overseas without the required immigration status.
The US Army states that enlisted applicants must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents holding a valid Green Card, alongside other eligibility requirements.
A Green Card provides permanent resident status, allowing eligible holders to live and work in the United States.
Non-citizens who meet the requirements may subsequently qualify for an expedited naturalisation process through military service, subject to applicable law.
However, military service is not a general visa programme, and a person cannot assume that applying to enlist will automatically provide permission to enter or reside in the United States.
7. Ukraine
Ukraine permits foreign nationals and stateless persons to serve in its armed forces under military contracts.
The country has recruited international volunteers during its war with Russia, including through its International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine.
Ukraine’s official recruitment information states that foreign volunteers can serve as full members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with applicable service conditions, remuneration and benefits.
Its foreign-national recruitment guidance says applicants must already be legally present in Ukraine to apply through the relevant Ground Forces recruitment route. Candidates are subject to background checks, medical examinations and other requirements.
The official International Legion website also provides information for foreigners seeking to apply.
However, prospective recruits must carefully consider the risks of military service in an active war zone, including the possibility of serious injury or death, as well as the legal implications of serving in a foreign armed force.
8. Russia
Russia permits foreign nationals to enter military service under contract, subject to its laws and recruitment requirements.
Russian legislation provides for foreign citizens and stateless persons to serve under military contracts. The legal framework has also been amended in recent years, including changes made in 2025.
However, the existence of a legal route does not mean every foreign national is automatically eligible or that all recruitment offers are genuine.
Anyone considering this option should independently verify the applicable law, contract terms, immigration requirements and consequences of military service. The risks associated with service during an international armed conflict also warrant particular attention.
9. New Zealand
New Zealand operates an overseas recruitment pathway for certain applicants with military backgrounds.
According to the New Zealand Defence Force’s overseas recruitment guidance, eligible candidates can include serving members of the armed forces of the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and Canada who meet the applicable service-release conditions.
The pathway also covers certain citizens of those countries who meet specified citizenship or residency criteria, provided they satisfy the relevant vacancy and rank requirements.
This is principally a route for experienced military personnel rather than an open enlistment programme for all foreign civilians.
Applicants must meet the Defence Force’s medical, security and professional requirements and obtain the necessary immigration status.
10. Israel: Special enlistment programme for foreign volunteers
Israel provides a special route through which eligible foreign volunteers can serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) without first becoming Israeli citizens.
The IDF identifies Mahal as an enlistment programme for foreign volunteers interested in serving in military combat and support roles.
This is different from unrestricted recruitment into the Israeli military. Applicants must meet the programme’s eligibility requirements, and participation depends on the applicable rules and recruitment arrangements.
The IDF also operates other programmes for foreign volunteers that involve supporting military activities without necessarily becoming full-time soldiers.
Prospective applicants should distinguish between formal enlistment and non-combat volunteer programmes before applying.
What Nigerians should know before applying
Although these countries provide routes for certain foreign nationals to serve, the requirements vary substantially.
- Nationality: Some countries accept applicants from specified nationalities, while others have broader foreign-recruitment systems.
- Immigration status: Canada and the United States generally require applicants to hold permanent resident status if they are not citizens. Australia’s eligibility rules also impose nationality and residency conditions.
- Military experience: Some overseas recruitment pathways, particularly in New Zealand and Australia, are designed for people who have already served in the military.
- Age and fitness: Applicants must meet the relevant age limits, medical standards, physical requirements and background checks.
- Legal consequences: Serving in a foreign military may have implications under the applicant’s home-country laws. Nigerians should seek reliable legal advice before signing a contract with a foreign armed force.
- Recruitment scams: Applicants should use official military recruitment websites and verify any offer before paying fees or sharing sensitive documents.
