By Zoila Palma: Belize joins the international community today in commemorating United Nations Day, marking the 81st anniversary of the global organization.
The occasion highlights the work of 22 United Nations agencies operating in Belize, 12 of which are based in the country, supporting development initiatives in partnership with the Government, civil society and local communities.
United Nations Day commemorates the entry into force of the UN Charter on October 24, 1945, which officially established the organization.
The annual observance provides an opportunity to reaffirm the principles of peace, international cooperation, equality and sustainable development that guide the United Nations in its efforts to address global challenges and promote a better future for all.
In Belize, the work of UN agencies and their partners focuses on creating opportunities for people and building a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable country.
This year’s observance also highlights the importance of collaboration in advancing human dignity and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Special Envoy Rossana Briceno said the day celebrates the power of unity, peace and international cooperation, encouraging renewed commitment to equality and sustainable development.
