ITANAGAR, Oct 25: At least 15 people have been arrested in connection with the violence in Pasighat, with more arrests likely as police intensify their investigation, Arunachal Pradesh Police IGP (Central Zone) Hibu Tamang said on Sunday.
Tamang said additional security forces had been deployed in Pasighat to maintain law and order following the unrest.
Six cases have been registered in connection with incidents of violence, arson and attacks on police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel, he said.
More than 40 personnel from the state police and CAPF, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-rank officer, were injured in stone-pelting and attacks allegedly carried out by protesters, according to the IGP.
Tamang said a detailed investigation was underway to identify those allegedly involved in instigating the youth and those responsible for the violence. Further legal action would be taken based on the findings, he added.
He also alleged that some protesters were intoxicated and carrying beer and liquor bottles during the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, NHPC officers and staff in Pasighat were safe and had been provided security by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Tamang said.
Police said the investigation was continuing and further arrests were expected as efforts to identify those involved gathered pace.
