Seventy-two Malaysians were detained overseas on suspicion of drug offences from January to Oct 15, with 1,704kg of drugs worth RM81.76 million seized.
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 72 Malaysians were detained overseas on suspicion of drug-related offences, with 1,704 kilogrammes (kg) of drugs, worth RM81.76 million, seized from January to Oct 15.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said 48 cases were recorded during the period, involving 57 men and 15 women.
He added that Thailand recorded the highest number of arrests at 19, followed by Indonesia (16), Taiwan and Singapore (eight each), Japan (five), the Philippines (four), India and Hong Kong (three each), Macau (two), and South Korea, Nigeria, the Maldives and Sri Lanka (one each).
“The NCID takes seriously the possibility that international drug syndicates are exploiting Malaysians as drug couriers through various methods, including job offers, lucrative rewards, travel sponsorship and requests to deliver goods on behalf of third parties.
“Such tactics could deceive individuals who are unaware of the risks and legal implications, exposing them to severe legal action in the countries concerned,” he said in a statement today.
Hussein said cases which had drawn attention included the detention of five Malaysians at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, on Oct 10, for allegedly attempting to smuggle about five kg of cocaine, worth RM3.1 million, as well as the detention of Malaysians in drug-related cases in Macau and Singapore.
These cases highlighted the risks of Malaysians becoming involved in international drug smuggling, which could result in severe penalties under the laws of the countries concerned.
“Every Malaysian staying overseas is subject to the laws of the country concerned. Some countries, including Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand, impose severe penalties, including the death penalty, for certain drug offences, depending on the type of offence, the quantity of drugs and the applicable laws.
“Other countries also impose lengthy prison terms or life imprisonment for serious drug trafficking and smuggling offences. Everyone must understand that involvement in drug-related crimes can have severe consequences for their own future and that of their family,” he said.
Hussein urged the public, particularly youths, students and those planning to travel overseas, to remain vigilant and reject suspicious job offers, free travel or lucrative rewards.
“The public should also refrain from carrying, keeping or handing over items belonging to others without knowing their contents and actual purpose. Do not be easily deceived, as syndicates can exploit anyone as a drug mule.
“There will be no compromise on drug trafficking and smuggling. The public is reminded not to allow themselves to be exploited by syndicates for temporary gains which could lead to severe penalties, jeopardise their future and tarnish the country’s image,” he said.
