Overview:
Fraud detection, radiology, and retention analytics carry the strongest proof.
Vendor claims shrink in neutral tests: credit models added about 4% in approvals, not 25%.
Drug discovery speeds early work, but late-phase approval odds still sit at 8% to 12%.
Companies invest heavily into data science, yet many cannot translate it into profits. Analyst estimates of the sector vary widely: Precedence Research puts the global analytics market at USD 83.79 billion for 2026, up from USD 64.75 billion a year earlier, while Straits Research lists USD 122.65 billion for the same year. Ten applications across business, healthcare, finance, and retail show where returns hold up and where claims run ahead of the proof.
A 5% Retention Gain Can Lift Profit by 25% to 95%
Churn models flag customers who are about to leave, so retention teams can act first. Bain & Company found that a 5% gain in retention can lift profit by 25% to 95%, and a new customer costs 5 to 25 times more to win than a current one. The study is older, but its logic still anchors most retention budgets.
Demand Forecasts Cut Errors Up to 50%
Artificial intelligence demand forecasts cut errors by 20% to 50%, per McKinsey, and trim inventory by 20% to 30%. Some sources claim up to 65% fewer lost sales from empty shelves. A Gartner survey from August 2026 adds a caution: 55% of chief supply chain officers cannot say whether their AI investments pay off, even though AI now takes 67% of supply chain digital budgets.
Radiology Holds 76% of FDA-Cleared AI Devices
Radiology dominates medical AI. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared 1,524 AI-enabled devices through the first quarter of 2026, and 1,164 of them, or 76%, analyze scans. GE HealthCare holds the top spot with 130 clearances, ahead of Siemens Healthineers at 95 and Philips at 58. The radiology share may thin out, though: it fell from 79% of clearances in March to 56% in April.
Why Drug Discovery Sprints Early but Crawls Late
Drug discovery shows the widest gap between promise and result. About 173 AI-designed programs sit in clinical development, investors have put roughly USD 60 billion into the field since 2019, and no AI-discovered drug had won full FDA approval by July 2026. Early work moved faster: discovery timelines shrank by 30% to 40%, and AI-made molecules cleared Phase I at 80% to 90% versus a historic 40% to 65%. Later phases tell a duller story, with overall approval odds still at 8% to 12%.
Sepsis Alerts Cut Deaths and Hospital Stays in One Study
Hospitals use prediction models to flag sepsis and readmission risk early. A multi-hospital study of one sepsis algorithm found 39.5% lower in-hospital mortality, 32.3% shorter stays, and 22.7% fewer 30-day readmissions. The study dates to 2020 and covered a single vendor's tool, so it works best as a landmark case, not a current benchmark.

Fraud Detection is the Most Mature Bank Tool
Fraud detection is the most mature use. More than 80% of top banks run AI fraud tools, and industry composites report false positives down by up to 80% with 90% to 99% detection accuracy. Criminals keep pace: Vyntra estimates global scam losses at USD 442 billion over the past 12 months, and about 40% of banks reported higher fraud losses in 2025.
Credit Models Gain Less in Neutral Tests
Credit models show the gap between vendor claims and neutral tests. Zest AI reports 25% more approvals and 20% fewer defaults from its deployments, while FinRegLab, an independent research group, found a gain of about 4% in approvals at mainstream risk cutoffs. Among mortgage lenders, 38% used AI in loan approval work in 2024, up from 15% in 2023.
Order Algorithms have No Agreed Market Size
Algorithms that place buy and sell orders on their own have no agreed market size. One report values the sector at USD 2.53 billion for 2025, another at USD 18.8 billion, and a third projects USD 27.17 billion for 2026. Adoption stories hold up better than those totals, so any claim about size needs a named source.
Recommendations Drive Up to 31% of Ecommerce Revenue
Recommendation engines drive 26% to 31% of ecommerce revenue on average. McKinsey puts the lift from personalization at 5% to 15%, with top performers near 40%. Amazon often gets credit for 35% of its revenue from recommendations, though that figure traces to an old McKinsey estimate, not a company filing.
Dynamic Price Tools Add 5% to 10% in Margin
Dynamic price tools adjust tags as demand, stock, and rival offers shift. McKinsey and the Boston Consulting Group report 2% to 5% more revenue and 5% to 10% better margins, and 58% of large retailers already run category-level versions. Guardrails matter: price floors, margin caps, and human sign-off on odd swings keep shoppers from losing trust.

What the Numbers Say About Where to Start
The strongest evidence sits in fraud, scans, and retention math, where independent counts and long track records back the claims. The shakiest sits in drug approvals, market size for automated trading, and vendor-led credit gains, where a headline number rarely survives a second source. Any team that plans a data science project should ask a plain question first: who measured the result, and did that party stand to profit from it?
