The Detroit Tigers had a useful offseason case study in the World Series matchup.
The Milwaukee Brewers reached the matchup with 15 players on their 26-man roster acquired through trades, according to Sports Illustrated’s Oct. 23 breakdown. Only one arrived through Major League free agency.
For the Tigers, those figures supported a practical question: how much of the next roster improvement could come from finding useful players already inside other organizations?
Detroit did not have to copy every move that brought Milwaukee to October. The circumstances behind each transaction differed, and a successful roster did not prove that another club could reproduce the same results.
Still, the composition offered an important reminder as offseason attention shifted toward free-agent lists. Player development and outside acquisitions can strengthen each other when the jobs are clearly defined.
Look for a Role Before Choosing a Name
The Brewers’ trade additions covered very different types of transactions.
William Contreras arrived in a three-team deal in 2023. Trevor Megill came from the Minnesota Twins that April. Christian Yelich joined Milwaukee in a 2018 trade with the Miami Marlins. The eventual World Series roster reflected decisions made across several years.
That history makes the lesson more useful for the Tigers. A productive trade does not have to carry the same price, timeline, or level of immediate attention as a franchise-changing blockbuster.
Detroit should begin with the work a player needs to perform. A pitcher who can supply dependable innings addresses a different problem than a reliever selected for difficult matchups. An infielder who stabilizes one position creates a different benefit from a bench player who covers several.
The existing examination of the pitching staff already showed why those distinctions mattered. Adding a recognizable name would not automatically resolve the underlying workload problem.
Protect Development Without Freezing the Roster
The Tigers also had young players whose opportunities required thoughtful planning.
The evaluation of Hao-Yu Lee’s defensive adjustment illustrated that process. A player can offer something valuable while still needing help in another part of his game. An outside addition should be judged partly by how clearly it fits around that development.
Detroit should apply the same discipline to any proposed trade. The relevant questions include the acquisition cost, remaining club control, expected role, and which existing player would lose playing time.
Those questions could rule out a deal even when the incoming player looked appealing in isolation. They could also reveal an opportunity that a free-agent-only search would miss.
The World Series supplied evidence that trade acquisitions can become central pieces of a contender. For the Tigers, the next step is to identify specific jobs worth filling, then compare every available route to fill them.
