Virgil van Dijk Contract Call Clear as Liverpool Midfield Issue Comes Into Focus
Liverpool have bigger decisions to make than handing out sentiment-based extensions, but Virgil van Dijk does not fall into that category. If the question is whether he still has the level, the answer looks obvious. He does. If the question is whether Liverpool should act before his current deal runs down, that answer looks obvious too.
The blunt case has been made in simple terms by club legend Graeme Souness speaking to The Mirror. “I think there’s still life left in Virgil, but what is he 35 now? I think there’s definitely another year left on him.” That is the starting point, and frankly it is hard to argue with. Van Dijk remains the reference point in Liverpool’s back line, the captain, the organiser and still, on most weeks, the calmest defender on the pitch.
This is not about rewarding past service. Liverpool have done too much of that at different points in their history and paid for it. This is about present-day usefulness and short-term planning. Van Dijk still gives them elite positioning, authority in both boxes and the sort of anticipation that only sharpens with age when the legs begin to lose a fraction. He reads danger early, and for a side still adapting under Andoni Iraola, that matters.
Virgil van Dijk remains Liverpool’s defensive reference
The old lazy line about decline after injury still gets recycled. It should not. “I mean, people criticized him when he got that terrible injury from the Everton goalkeeper Pickford, but he came back from that and it’s a lazy thing to say, he’s not the same player. I didn’t see that.” Fair enough. Van Dijk may not cover ground in exactly the same way he once did at 27, but centre-backs are not judged on sprint tests alone. Timing, angles and decision-making count for more, and he still has all three in abundance.
There was another pointed observation too. “I think [Ibrahima] Konate was a difficult player to be playing with. I see there’s still life left in Virgil. I’ll be giving him another year anyway with an option to take a second year because he’s a Rolls-Royce of a player. And if anything, he’s got better the longer he’s been at Liverpool.” That is a sensible contract structure, one year plus an option, low risk, high value and aligned with where Liverpool are as a squad.

Calling him a “Rolls-Royce” is familiar language, but in this case it still fits. “I mean that’s one. He’s a Rolls-Royce. He’s always been a Rolls-Royce. But as you get older, your brain should be kicking in and even seeing things earlier.” That is exactly the point. Defending at the top level is not only physical. It is about seeing the problem before everyone else notices there is one.
Liverpool under Iraola are trying to become a more aggressive, front-foot side. That requires trust at the back. It also requires defenders who can survive the moments when the press is beaten. Van Dijk remains one of the few in the squad you would trust to handle those situations repeatedly.
Andoni Iraola needs more from Liverpool midfield
The more interesting point concerns why Liverpool have looked patchy. It is easy to blame defenders when goals go in. It is easy to blame the goalkeeper too. Usually, that is a shortcut. “I’ve not seen enough of them. But I do like the manager. I live down in Poole. I’ve seen Iraola work at Bournemouth and he was a fabulous manager or coach there.” The name may have come out wrong, but the point stands. Iraola has a clear identity, and Liverpool appointed him for a reason.
“Bournemouth are one of the best teams to watch. High intensity front foot football. And he was responsible for that. He knows what he’s doing.” Correct. Nobody sane appoints Iraola and then acts surprised by his demands. The issue is not whether the approach works. The issue is whether every part of the team is executing it properly yet.
That is where the midfield criticism lands. “And why Liverpool made a slow start, I don’t know. I think the bits I’ve seen on television, maybe the intensity when they don’t have the ball from their midfield, which in turn makes you vulnerable. It’s not just center backs not doing their job or the goalkeeper having a bad game.” Again, fair. A press fails in midfield before it exposes the back four.
“A lot of it can be traced back to the midfield not putting the ball under pressure. When you don’t have it, working the players who are in possession to keep their heads down so they can’t pick a cute pass against you.” That is football stripped to basics. Stop the pass at source, and your defenders look quicker, stronger and safer. Fail to do it, and they end up defending impossible spaces.
Contract decision should be straightforward
So the Van Dijk contract issue and the Liverpool midfield issue are connected. One is a reminder of what the team still has, an elite defender capable of guiding transitions and holding standards. The other is a warning about what the team still lacks, consistency in the press and enough bite in the centre of the pitch.
Liverpool do not need to overcomplicate the first part. Keep Van Dijk, sensibly and on the right terms. Then fix the legs and intensity ahead of him. Do those two things, and Iraola has a platform. Ignore either, and Liverpool will keep looking like a side with good players and incomplete control.
