XRP’s role extends into cross-currency settlement and automated commerce as its underlying blockchain attracts financial institutions. Tokenized funds, stablecoin custody, and brokerage products illustrate the ecosystem’s connections with traditional finance beyond cryptocurrency trading.
Key Takeaways
- XRP can bridge currencies and tokens while supporting network operations.
- Banks and asset managers bring custody and investment products to XRPL.
- ETFs and automated payments extend access and financial applications.
XRP Connects Currency Transfers With Automated Payments
The XRP account on X highlighted cross-currency payments, institutional finance, and software-driven transactions in a community guide posted Oct. 20. Jointly managed by Ripple and the XRP Ledger Foundation, the account stated:
“There’s more happening around XRP than ever before.”
“Individuals, developers, companies and institutions are using XRP for everything from buying and holding to payments, trading, apps and new financial use cases, and much of that activity runs on the XRP Ledger,” it continued.
Transactions on the XRP Ledger, or XRPL, settle in three to five seconds for fractions of a cent, the account explained.
AI agents can purchase API access, computing, and other digital services using XRP or Ripple USD (RLUSD). Supporting tools include the XRPL AI Starter Kit and x402, a protocol enabling automatic online payments. The guide also identifies support for the Machine Payments Protocol developed by Stripe and Tempo.
Tokenized Funds and Bank Custody Connect XRPL With Institutions
Institutional applications include Treasuries, money market funds, commodities, and other assets represented onchain. The account names Aviva Investors, Guggenheim Treasury Services, and Ondo Finance among participants. Aviva’s tokenized dollar liquidity fund share class preserves the conventional fund’s investment objective and regulatory protections.
Alongside tokenized investments, banks provide safekeeping through services including Standard Chartered’s RLUSD custody offering, confirmed live Oct. 12. The overview also identifies Brazil’s CSD BR mirroring fund ownership records on XRPL. Other developing applications involve lending and capital markets.
A planned collateral integration with Ripple and LMAX Group, an institutional trading infrastructure operator, would recognize RLUSD’s value as security for trading obligations while tokens remain at Standard Chartered. Implementation requires testing, documentation, regulatory compliance, and approvals.
RLUSD and other stablecoins are designed to maintain a reference value and enable round-the-clock transfers. The account described XRP’s relationship with assets issued on its network:
“More assets don’t replace XRP’s role. As XRPL’s native asset, XRP is used for transaction fees and reserves and can serve as a neutral liquidity and bridge asset between currencies and tokens.”
ETFs and Onchain Markets Broaden Financial Participation
Brokerage products provide XRP exposure without requiring investors to hold tokens directly. The guide identifies spot XRP ETFs in the U.S. and Canada, including Grayscale’s XRP ETF and U.S. offerings from Bitwise, Canary Capital, Franklin Templeton, and 21Shares. Exchange-traded products also operate in Brazil and European markets.
Direct participation takes place through XRPL’s built-in decentralized exchange, where assets trade against XRP and other issued tokens. Permissioned markets restrict access to approved participants, while liquidity pools combine deposited assets to facilitate transactions. The account explained:
“On XRPL, holders can also provide assets to liquidity pools and receive a share of trading fees as liquidity providers.”
Liquidity provision carries market risks, and XRP offers no native staking rewards. Cross-chain bridges and wrapped XRP connect holders with applications on other networks, including Solana. Developers can explore payment, trading, tokenization, and AI applications through documentation, code examples, and test environments at xrpl.org.
