Coming into the 2026 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys were considered somewhat of a dark horse contender. A 7-9-1 record in 2025 wasn't great, but first-time head coach Brian Schottenheimer looked to be the right pick by Jerry Jones, and the team looked to have very positive vibes heading into 2026.
But through six games, the Cowboys simply haven't gotten better in any regard from a year ago. In fact, the offense has taken a big step back in recent weeks. Two straight losses against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers, in which the offense put up just 29 combined points, has many people asking for changes to be made.

Stephen A. Smith says someone needs to be fired for Cowboys' 2-4 start, even though Jerry Jones is the one responsible
Noted Cowboys critic Stephen A. Smith is one of those people. Despite reveling in the fact that the Cowboys are struggling, even Smith is begging for Jones to make a bold move to turn Dallas' season around, and he has set a deadline for it to happen: before Halloween.
You got the talent, but you brought in a young defensive coordinator. You gotta bring in a lead assistant. You got a guy in Brian Schottenheimer that's talking about the effort is there, the fight is there. Really? I couldn't tell... Jerry Jones is responsible for the assemblage of all of that. The buck stops with him.
I'm gonna save Dak Prescott from a literal sense. but from the ivory towers out there, the man that can sit up there and make sure that none of this came together like this is the man responsible for allowing it to happen. I got to tell my buddy Jerry Jones, I need you to rethink those things. It ain’t too late. It ain’t too late, but some people need to go. Not before Thanksgiving, before Halloween.
Smith didn't specifically mention who exactly needs to be fired, but it sounds like Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker would be the two on Smith's hot seat.
Jones isn't usually keen on making drastic in-season decisions, though, and he has shown to be very fond of Schottenheimer.
