The government has made an investment of 32 million euros in order to refill the artificial sand, stabilise the cliffs along the Algarve coast, and restructure the groynes at Quarteira to combat coastal erosion in the eastern Algarve (Sotavento).
The financial package, which was presented by Maria da Graça Carvalho, the Minister of Environment and Energy, includes five major structural measures in various municipalities in the area.
Coastal protection projects
€16 million is allocated to Albufeira, where an area of about 8.5 kilometres of coastline is covered, including Peneco Beach, Forte de São João, Falésia Beach and Rocha Baixinha; the project will involve both beach nourishment and direct actions to stabilise the cliff faces. In Quarteira, €4.5 million has been provisioned for reconfiguring the coastal groynes in order to reduce the amount of sediment they retain and the resulting erosive effect on the beaches to the east.
The project also involves an intervention costing €1.5 million at the beaches of Pinhão, Dona Ana and Camilo in the town of Lagos, and around €5 million for the Faro Island area, the first stage of study for Faro Island alone amounting to €984,000.
Further investments in Portimão
At the same time, the second stage of sand replenishment at Rocha and Vau beaches in Portimão will cost almost €3 million. Furthermore, the Environment Minister pointed out advances being made with respect to the Albufeira flood-control tunnel project—part of the municipality's General Drainage Plan—which will involve a separate national investment of about €46 million.
