In the modern era of sports, the best a team can hope for when revealing a jersey, logo, or design change of any kind is to avoid pissing off its fans.
Earning praise is basically off the table, or at least reserved for the select few — the Miami Vice colorways from almost a decade ago come to mind. A general “This isn’t very good” would be a passing grade in most scenarios, especially given how quickly our brains forget and adjust to the new normal of whatever jersey is showing up on primetime. There are moments of true horror, like the Rams’ color-gradient numbers or the Jaguars’ two-tone helmets, but our eyes eventually grow accustomed to even the boldest designs.
One response you aren’t looking for, under any circumstances, when revealing a new logo is, “Is this kind of giving off bad guys in WWII vibes?”
Unfortunately, such was the case when the Atlanta Falcons changed their profile picture to a throwback logo ahead of their home game against the San Francisco 49ers this week.

While it’s far from a one-to-one direct comp of the Imperial Eagle logo as used by the Nazi party, the color scheme (black, white, red, and tan) and the general nature of the “minimalist bird made up of sharp, straight lines” were enough to get many social media users to connect the dots. The angled claw likely didn’t help matters much.
Quickly, fans responded with jokes, as well as AI slop depicting the new logo alongside images of the bad guys in WWII.

That said, not everyone got the comparison. Jason Kirk of the Shutdown Fullcast noted on Bluesky that while he got the jokes, he didn’t see what other fans seemed to be seeing.
Others noted that this logo has been in the Falcons’ throwback rotation for quite a few years now.
@CFBHome This is the original Falcons logo over the original helmet stripe- both from 1966.
They’ve worn the throwback with these elements twice every year since 2022. They previously wore them twice annually from 2009-2013. They wore this logo on a black helmet twice/yr from 2016-2021. https://t.co/XZUnzqJJJr

Like with anything else, though, these jokes tend to run downhill. Once there’s a bit of “lol this logo looks a bit third reich-y” in the air, it’s more fun to keep making jokes than it is to say, “I don’t see it.”
Still, in 2026 there sadly remains a need to continue mocking Nazis and their awful ideas, politics, and yes, fashion. Unfortunately for the Falcons, their logo reveal was close enough to get those jokes rolling. With that in mind, go 49ers this weekend.
