According to guidance from the UK Home Office, the route covers members of International Armed Forces and International Civilian Employees attached to NATO forces or the Australian Department of Defence.
Partners and dependent children of qualifying personnel may also apply under the same immigration framework.
Who qualifies for the UK military visa route?
The rules draw on two pieces of UK legislation: the Immigration Act 1971 and the Visiting Forces Act 1952.

Foreign military personnel and civilian employees who qualify for exemption from standard immigration control under either law fall within the scope of this route.
Eligible applicants can submit their applications from within the UK or from abroad. This provides an option for qualifying personnel already stationed in the country as well as those preparing to arrive.
However, not everyone connected to a foreign military force qualifies.
Members of International Reserve Forces are excluded from this route. Civilians supporting a reserve force are also ineligible and must consider alternative immigration options.
Which family members can apply?
The route extends eligibility to the partners and dependent children of qualifying foreign military personnel and civilian defence employees.
This allows eligible family members to apply under the same framework as the principal applicant, subject to the applicable requirements.
The provisions are particularly relevant to personnel whose overseas assignments involve relocating to the UK with their families.
Key limitation of the UK military visa route
One of the most important restrictions is that the route does not provide a pathway to permanent residence in the UK.
The time an individual spends in the country under this immigration category cannot count towards the residence period required for indefinite leave to remain, commonly known as settlement.
This means that even if qualifying personnel remain in the UK for an extended period under the route, their time under this category will not contribute towards meeting the residence requirement for settlement.
The visa framework is therefore designed to accommodate eligible foreign military and civilian defence personnel during their assignments, rather than provide a route to long-term immigration status.
Applicants and their families should review the UK Home Office guidance to confirm their eligibility, the applicable conditions and whether another immigration route would be needed for any future plans to settle permanently in the country.
