At least 12 people, half of them juveniles and the youngest just 11 years old, were injured in a mass shooting near FAMU’s Bragg Memorial Stadium Saturday night amid homecoming weekend.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said 11 people suffered gunshot wounds. Three victims were seriously injured, including one in critical condition, while eight were stable. A FAMU student was among the injured.
Police said preliminary information indicates an altercation occurred between individuals before the shooting, which Revell called an "isolated incident."
Midnight update: At least 12 injured in Perry Street shooting; youngest victim is 11
At least 12 people were injured, including six juveniles, in the shooting near FAMU’s Bragg Memorial Stadium Saturday night, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said at a late-night press conference.
“I stand before you tonight devastated,” Revell said.
Eleven of the victims suffered gunshot wounds. Six victims are adults and six are juveniles, with the youngest just 11 years old, Revell said. A twelfth victim is the grandmother of one of the victims who was injured fleeing from the scene. He said one of the victims is a FAMU student.
Three victims suffered serious injuries and one was in critical condition. Eight were in stable condition.
He spoke directly to the victims and their families: "We hurt with you, and we will continue to get you the answers you so desperately want."
The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. near Perry and Manatee streets. Preliminary information indicates an altercation occurred between individuals before the shooting, Revell said.
No one has been arrested at this time.
Revell said investigators believe this was an "isolated incident between two or three individuals and nothing more than that."
He asked anyone who saw anything or knows anything to come forward with information. Anyone with information is asked to call TPD at 850-891-4200 or Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS. More information will be released as it becomes available.
"My message to the community is this... No family should have to experience this kind of violence, this kind of fear, this kind of heartbreak," he said.
Revell took a moment to recognize "some of the heroic efforts" of first responders.
"We had officers who were picking up victims and carrying them in their arms to transport because they couldn't get through the mass of people," he said.
While choking up, he said it's critical for crowds to disperse so officers can get to victims.
"Without hesitation they ran into the middle of this, still not knowing where the shooters were, still not knowing how many victims they had. They ran into the middle of this and put themselves in harms way."

10:30 p.m.: Social media videos show scenes of chaos

Video of the shooting and its aftermath are circulating on social media.
One video viewed by tens of thousands of people on Facebook shows police carrying a victim through a parking lot on a cloth stretcher. Another shows officers giving medical attention to a person on the ground by flashlight as people shout all around. Still another shows a swarm of police in all directions managing a crowd of bystanders. Trash litters the scene from where people fled in panic as bystanders talk about someone being hit in the head and another being shot in the back.
"Everybody ran; everybody cleared off," a person can be heard saying.
People also began coming to grips with the magnitude of the shooting on social media.
"I can only imagine the level of panic and chaos that an incident of this magnitude may have caused. Beyond those directly affected by the shooting, my concern is that hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of people may have rushed to safety, potentially creating dangerous crowd surges and resulting in additional injuries," a pastor wrote on FAMU's Facebook page. "I sincerely pray that the number of injuries is minimal and that everyone affected is safe."
