The family of the late Walvis Bay businessman Luis Garces, who owned a building that once housed a cinema and later a club, says he will be remembered for his loving personality.
Garces died at the age of 76 on Friday after spending four months in hospital following a second stroke.
“He would always feed the birds at the lagoon, a familiar activity that those who knew him may remember,” a family member says.
The family says he will also be missed for his special sense of humour.
Garces suffered his first stroke three years ago and experienced another setback a few months ago.
Born in Madeira on 25 August 1950, Garces moved to Cape Town with his parents as a child before settling at Walvis Bay, where he became part of the town’s business and social life.
He owned the Harbour Cafe and the Plaza, businesses known in the coastal town over the years.
After selling his businesses and retiring, Garces spent much of his time fishing, one of his favourite pastimes.
Garces leaves behind his wife, Santelle, and five children, Sacha, Adrian, Logan, Elvan and Kiva.
