China warns its citizens of abductions and trafficking in Thailand as criminal gangs use fake jobs and business deals to trap victims. With arrivals struggling, a two-million forecast cut and newly cancelled star appearance add to fears over tourism.
China has issued a fresh warning to its citizens visiting Thailand after another spate of kidnappings, ransom demands and trafficking cases. Criminal gangs are luring Chinese nationals with fake jobs and entertainment contracts before transporting victims to scam compounds in Burma. The 16 October alert comes as Thailand’s Chinese tourism recovery remains fragile following the notorious Wang Xing kidnapping. Previously, that scandal triggered mass cancellations, including 40 charter flights. Meanwhile, Thai travel agents have cut their 2026 Chinese arrivals forecast by two million to seven million. A Chinese actress has now cancelled a Bangkok appearance over safety concerns. Although tourism officials expect limited immediate damage, the latest warning raises fresh concerns ahead of Chinese New Year in 2027. Right now, an already revised target for 2026 is questionable.
China has issued a fresh travel warning to its citizens visiting Thailand following another series of kidnappings, disappearances and human trafficking cases. The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok issued the advisory on Friday, 16 October.
It warned that criminal gangs were using fraudulent employment offers, business invitations and entertainment contracts to trap Chinese nationals. Victims have subsequently been transported across the Burmese border and forced to work inside criminal scam compounds.
The warning comes as Thailand struggles to rebuild Chinese tourism following the damaging Wang Xing kidnapping scandal in January 2025. Tourism officials expect limited immediate disruption. However, the consequences could become more apparent in 2027, particularly during the Chinese New Year holiday period.
Chinese embassy warns of fake jobs and entertainment contracts used to lure visitors into trafficking
The embassy published its advisory on Friday, with the Chinese Consulate-General in Songkhla reproducing it the following day. The warning followed several recent incidents involving Chinese nationals who disappeared after arriving in Thailand.
Some were illegally confined, threatened or transported into Burma. In particular, the embassy identified recruitment operations targeting people seeking employment, investment opportunities and entertainment contracts. Criminal networks were using apparently legitimate commercial arrangements to draw victims into Thailand.
The methods included advertisements offering lucrative employment, investment partnerships, business inspections and commercial projects. More recently, criminals have targeted livestreamers, online influencers, performers and other entertainment industry workers.
The gangs reportedly advertise filming contracts, auditions and performance assignments. Yet these invitations can conceal trafficking operations. Once inside Thailand, victims may be collected from airports or accommodation by people connected to criminal networks.
In response, the embassy urged Chinese travellers to verify employers, business contacts and contractual arrangements before departure. It specifically warned against unusually generous offers covering flights, accommodation or other expenses.
Chinese travellers told to check transport, avoid border areas and keep relatives informed of journeys
Visitors were also advised to investigate investment proposals and business partnerships promising exceptionally high returns. Transport security received particular attention, with travellers warned against allowing strangers to control their movements or change agreed destinations.
Chinese nationals were urged to use licensed transport operators and legitimate travel companies. Separately, the embassy warned against accepting free journeys from strangers or acquaintances. Travellers were advised to reject unexpected changes to routes, destinations or meeting venues.
They were also told to share travel plans with relatives and maintain regular contact. In addition, the embassy cautioned against surrendering passports, mobile telephones or bank cards to other people.
Travel towards dangerous border areas, particularly along the Thai-Burmese frontier, was strongly discouraged. The advisory did not prohibit Chinese nationals from visiting Thailand. Instead, it identified specific criminal dangers and recommended additional precautions.
Nevertheless, the announcement delivered another setback for Thailand’s tourism industry. China remains the kingdom’s largest international visitor market, although arrivals remain considerably below pre-pandemic levels.
Chinese actor Wang Xing kidnapped after fake filming offer as Thailand struggles to regain visitor numbers
Approximately 11 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2019. By 2024, arrivals had recovered to approximately 6.73 million following the restoration of easier travel arrangements.
That recovery suffered a major setback in January 2025. Chinese actor Wang Xing disappeared after travelling to Thailand for what he believed was a legitimate filming assignment. He had accepted an employment offer connected to an entertainment production.
After arriving at Bangkok’s airport, Wang was collected and transported towards the Burmese border. However, the journey ended inside a criminal scam compound rather than at a filming location.
Trafficked workers at such facilities were forced to participate in online fraud operations. Thai and Chinese cooperation eventually secured Wang’s rescue on 7 January 2025. The incident immediately attracted extensive publicity across China, where Wang was already a recognisable entertainment figure.
Wang Xing kidnapping triggers Chinese cancellations, lost charter flights and concert losses in Thailand
His disappearance became a major story on Chinese television and social media. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV subsequently produced a documentary examining the kidnapping.
According to the programme, Wang was transferred between three different scam operations within four days. Furthermore, the documentary reported that criminals forced him to take out substantial online loans during his captivity. Those debts reportedly remained a problem even after his return to China.
The case generated widespread alarm among Chinese travellers planning holidays in Thailand. Almost immediately, travel agencies began reporting cancellations. Airlines also experienced falling demand for flights to Thai destinations.
Channel News Asia reported that Thai Lion Air lost 40 charter flights from Chinese cities before the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday. The airline reported a reduction of approximately 20% associated with those cancellations. Thai tourism officials also acknowledged thousands of cancelled Chinese holiday reservations.
Chinese singer Eason Chan cancelled a planned concert in Thailand because of safety concerns. Meanwhile, the damage extended beyond individual holidaymakers and entertainment events.
Flight cancellations reveal wider trafficking routes from Thai airports into criminal compounds in Burma
By February 2025, research cited by the South China Morning Post indicated sharply rising flight cancellations involving Thailand. Japan and Singapore were among the destinations benefiting from changing Chinese travel preferences. The kidnapping subsequently became a major issue in discussions about Thailand’s reputation as a safe destination.
The Wang Xing case also exposed a wider international trafficking operation. Criminal gangs operating in Burma were using Thailand as an entry point for victims recruited overseas. Many victims believed they were accepting legitimate employment contracts.
Others were invited to business meetings, investment discussions or entertainment assignments. In reality, the arrangements frequently involved recruiters working for criminal syndicates. After arriving in Thailand, victims were collected and transported towards border provinces.
Some were initially accommodated in Bangkok before being moved to Tak or Kanchanaburi. Subsequently, they were transferred across the Burmese border into criminal compounds. Inside these facilities, trafficked workers were forced to participate in online fraud.
Reuters investigations during 2025 documented extensive criminal operations involving foreign nationals held inside Burmese scam compounds. The scale of the operations remained substantial despite international enforcement efforts.
Thai police estimate up to 100,000 in Burmese scam compounds as fresh trafficking cases emerge in 2026
In March 2025, Thai police estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 people might remain inside compounds around Myawaddy. That estimate followed multinational operations targeting criminal networks along the border. Even so, trafficking cases continued to emerge during 2026.
In April, Chinese media reported that a female university student had travelled to Thailand around the Songkran holiday. She was subsequently deceived into entering a scam compound across the Burmese border. Chinese news outlet Jiemian reported the case, highlighting continuing dangers around the Three Pagodas Pass area.
Another trafficking operation involved four Chinese nationals who arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 3 May 2026. The four had accepted a business invitation from a Chinese associate.
According to an official Thai government account, they were initially taken to accommodation in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district. Their hosts subsequently transported them towards Mae Sot in Tak province. From there, they were taken across the Burmese border and forced to work inside a criminal call-centre operation.
Four Chinese visitors lured by business invitation and trafficked through Mae Sot before rescue in May
Eventually, cooperation involving Thailand, China and Burma secured their rescue on 22 May. Thai police subsequently investigated the recruiters, drivers and organisers involved. The investigation focused on the network responsible for moving the victims through Thailand. Yet not every kidnapping case involved a fraudulent employment contract.
In August, The Beijing News reported another incident involving a Chinese tourist visiting Thailand. The woman entered a vehicle she mistakenly believed belonged to her tour guide.
Instead, she was abducted. She eventually escaped after shouting for assistance at a police checkpoint. The incident attracted attention because the victim had been travelling as an ordinary tourist.
She had not accepted a suspicious employment offer or travelled to attend a business meeting. Consequently, the case raised further concerns about transport security. It also reflected the specific warnings contained in the Chinese embassy’s latest advisory.
Further incidents followed during September and October. The South China Morning Post reported that a 34-year-old Chinese photographer disappeared after travelling to Bangkok for photographic work.
Ransom demand for missing photographer and Tak trafficking arrest deepen Chinese concerns over Thailand
His family subsequently received a ransom demand while searching for him in Thailand. The family reported the incident to Chinese and Thai officials. Separately, another disappearance involved a Shanghai music teacher who was reported missing after 25 September. An urgent social media appeal published on 1 October drew attention to the case.
The South China Morning Post subsequently reported that the missing individuals had returned to China with embassy assistance. On another front, further evidence of trafficking activity emerged in Tak province.
On 10 October, Thai police arrested a 30-year-old Thai man suspected of involvement in a trafficking network. Investigators believed the operation had lured three Chinese nationals to Thailand through fraudulent employment offers. The victims were subsequently transported towards the Burmese border. The arrest came just six days before the Chinese embassy issued its latest warning.
The publicity surrounding the disappearances was spreading through Chinese news organisations and social media. The South China Morning Post published detailed coverage of the embassy’s latest intervention.
It also examined the growing number of cases involving entertainers, photographers and online personalities. Notably, the publicity added to a long-running problem for Thailand’s reputation among Chinese travellers. Concerns about kidnapping and criminal trafficking had already become prominent in China during 2023.
Chinese social media kidnapping rumours and crime film fuel fears about visiting Thailand during 2023
Early that year, Chinese social media circulated claims that visitors could be kidnapped while travelling in Thailand. Some posts also referred to human trafficking and organ removal. The Thai Embassy in Beijing rejected certain stories as false. It publicly reassured Chinese travellers about their safety in Thailand. Nevertheless, the controversy intensified following the release of the Chinese crime thriller No More Bets in 2023.
The film depicted people being deceived into travelling to Southeast Asia before becoming trapped inside criminal scam operations. Although its setting was fictional, Chinese audiences associated the storyline with criminal compounds in Burma, Cambodia and Thailand. The film became a major commercial success. Its storyline also generated extensive discussion about the dangers of travelling to Southeast Asia. A Weibo survey conducted at the time attracted approximately 54,000 respondents.
Of those, 85% indicated that they would avoid ASEAN destinations because of safety concerns. However, the poll involved self-selected internet users and did not represent a scientific national survey. The controversy nevertheless became sufficiently serious for Thailand and China to discuss the film’s tourism impact in November 2023. Thailand’s reputation suffered another setback following a deadly shooting at Bangkok’s Siam Paragon shopping centre.
Siam Paragon shooting kills Chinese tourist before visa-free travel helps revive arrivals during 2024
On 3 October 2023, a teenage gunman opened fire inside the popular shopping complex. Two people were killed, including a Chinese tourist. Five others were wounded. The shooting attracted extensive international coverage.
Chinese news organisations also reported the killing of the Chinese visitor. The incident occurred as Thailand was attempting to revive Chinese tourism through visa-free entry arrangements. Reuters subsequently reported concerns within the tourism industry about further reputational damage.
Chinese arrivals nevertheless recovered substantially during 2024. Thailand introduced reciprocal visa-free travel arrangements with China and continued promoting its tourism destinations.
By the end of that year, approximately 6.73 million Chinese visitors had entered the kingdom. Even so, concerns about criminal activity remained prominent in Chinese media and online discussions. The Wang Xing kidnapping in January 2025 subsequently revived those fears.
This time, the incident involved a real victim whose ordeal closely resembled the fictional events depicted in No More Bets. Consequently, the case received extensive coverage from Chinese state media and commercial news organisations.
Thai travel agents cut Chinese arrivals forecast by two million as kidnappings and higher costs hit demand
The resulting cancellations damaged Thailand’s tourism recovery throughout 2025. By 2026, Thai travel industry representatives were again warning about the consequences. On 4 June, Thanapol Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, disclosed a major forecast reduction.
The association had initially expected nine million Chinese visitors during 2026. However, that forecast was reduced to approximately seven million. The revision represented a reduction of two million visitors, or approximately 22%.
Thanapol identified kidnapping fears, ransom cases and criminal scam operations among the principal concerns. Higher travel costs were another factor. He also warned that negative stories were spreading rapidly across Chinese social media and short-video platforms.
The publicity was damaging Thailand’s image as a safe destination. Importantly, the forecast reduction came four months before the embassy’s latest warning. Therefore, it cannot be attributed to the advisory issued on 16 October.
Nevertheless, it demonstrated the extent of existing concerns within Thailand’s tourism industry. By 10 October, Chinese arrivals had exceeded 4.07 million, according to Tourism and Sports Ministry figures.
Chinese tourism remains below pre-pandemic levels as industry expects limited immediate warning impact
China remained Thailand’s largest international source market, ahead of Malaysia. However, the overall recovery remained incomplete. Krungsri Research’s October economic bulletin reported that Chinese visitor numbers remained considerably below pre-pandemic levels.
During the first nine months of 2026, arrivals were approximately 46% of comparable pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, the tourism industry faced further pressure from travel costs and competition from other Asian destinations.
The latest embassy warning therefore arrived at a sensitive point in Thailand’s recovery. Tourism officials do not expect an immediate collapse in Chinese arrivals.
A Bangkok Post report published on Tuesday, 20 October, cited assessments from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and industry representatives. They expected the latest advisory to have limited consequences during the remainder of 2026. Many Chinese holidaymakers had already booked flights, accommodation and travel packages.
Existing reservations could therefore limit the immediate impact. However, the outlook for 2027 remains uncertain. Chinese New Year falls during the first quarter of 2027, making advance reservations particularly important.
Chinese actress cancels Bangkok event as embassy warning follows earlier intervention over Sa Kaeo case
Travel decisions made during the final months of 2026 could influence arrivals early next year. In parallel, Chinese travellers considering new bookings may encounter further reports about kidnappings and trafficking operations. No reliable estimate of losses directly attributable to the October warning has yet been established.
A separate development has already demonstrated the continuing effects of safety concerns. On Monday, 19 October, Chinese actress Bai Lu cancelled a fan meeting scheduled for Bangkok on 25 October. Her agency cited concerns about travel safety, according to Chinese entertainment reporting.
Organisers also arranged compensation covering flights and accommodation expenses. The cancellation followed the embassy’s warning about fraudulent invitations targeting entertainers and online celebrities.
The advisory was not China’s first diplomatic intervention over the safety of its nationals during 2026. On 20 May, the Chinese embassy issued a formal statement concerning illegal confinement and extortion in Sa Kaeo province. The embassy confirmed that it had contacted Thai officials about the case. It requested a lawful and transparent investigation. Furthermore, it called for stronger law enforcement oversight and improved public security management.
Chinese embassy warnings focus on trafficking methods as Thai police pursue recruiters and transporters
The statement also linked Chinese citizens’ safety to maintaining favourable conditions for bilateral exchanges and cooperation. Chinese diplomats continued raising concerns about Thailand’s treatment of Chinese nationals.
The latest October advisory followed those earlier interventions. However, its published recommendations concerned criminal activity, suspicious employment offers, transport arrangements and border security. It contained no reference to Thailand’s foreign policy, trade negotiations or strategic relationships.
China has previously demonstrated that official travel guidance can influence international visitor flows. Warnings involving Japan during diplomatic tensions in 2025 and 2026 were followed by reduced Chinese tourism demand.
However, the latest Thailand advisory followed documented kidnapping and trafficking cases. The Thai government has already participated in multinational rescue operations targeting scam compounds along the Burmese border. Police have also investigated recruiters, transport operators and suspected trafficking organisers.
Cooperation with Chinese officials has secured the release of victims trapped inside criminal operations. Nevertheless, the latest cases show that trafficking networks remain active. The Chinese embassy’s warning places particular emphasis on how victims are recruited and transported.
Criminal gangs use fake jobs and business invitations to move Chinese victims across the Burmese border
Criminal gangs frequently approach targets through apparently legitimate employment, investment or entertainment opportunities. Some offer attractive salaries, paid accommodation and travel expenses. Others arrange business meetings or professional assignments in Thailand.
However, the journey can end at a border crossing rather than the advertised destination. Victims may be taken from Bangkok to temporary accommodation before being transported towards Tak or Kanchanaburi.
Subsequently, they are moved into Burma, where criminal compounds operate beyond the direct control of Thai police. The embassy therefore urged travellers to scrutinise every stage of their journey. In particular, it warned against allowing unknown people to control transport arrangements.
It also advised travellers to reject sudden changes to destinations and maintain contact with relatives. Meanwhile, Thailand’s tourism industry faces the consequences of continuing negative publicity.
The damage extends beyond people directly targeted by trafficking networks. Ordinary holidaymakers also encounter reports of kidnappings, ransom demands and disappearances while considering travel destinations. Similar publicity coincided with substantial cancellations during the 2025 Lunar New Year period.
Tourism industry awaits 2027 Chinese New Year bookings while police investigate trafficking networks
The scale of any new downturn remains unknown. Thailand’s tourism industry must now assess bookings for the remainder of 2026 and the opening months of 2027. The June reduction in the Chinese arrivals forecast already reflected serious concerns about the market.
Meanwhile, the latest embassy warning has added another security alert to three years of damaging publicity. The next indication of its economic impact will come through airline schedules, advance reservations and official arrival figures.
Chinese New Year bookings will be particularly important. At the same time, Thai police continue investigating trafficking networks responsible for recruiting Chinese nationals and moving victims towards Burma.

Thailand losing appeal to Chinese tourists despite a gain in numbers from last year as Vietnam rises
The October arrest in Tak province remains part of those investigations. Further cases involving missing Chinese visitors have also drawn the attention of Chinese diplomats. Meanwhile, the embassy continues urging its nationals to verify employment offers, use licensed transport and avoid dangerous border areas.
The warning remains in force as Thailand approaches the final months of 2026. Its measurable effect on Chinese tourism may not become clear until the first quarter of 2027. That period will include the next major Chinese holiday travel season, when Thailand hopes to attract substantially more visitors.
