The Prix Marcel Duchamp jury announced Thursday that it has awarded the 2026 prize to artist duo David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin, known for their multidisciplinary practice that spans installation, sculpture, video, performance, and photography.
The Prix Marcel Duchamp is considered France’s most prestigious art prize, with winners recieving €35,000, or just over $40,000. For the award, a jury typically selects four nominees, who show together at the Centre Pompidou in October. This year, however, five nominees were chosen—Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa, Josèfa Ntjam, a participant in last year’s Bienal de São Paulo, artist and filmmaker Laura Henno, and Brognon and Rollin—and the annual exhibition was held at Musée d’Arte Moderne de Paris due to the Pompidou’s extended closure.
This year’s jury comprised Xavier Rey, director of the Centre Pompidou, along with Claude Bonnin, director of Adiaf, the organization that has facilitated the prize since its creation in 2000; Akemi Shiraha, of the Association Marcel Duchamp; Fabrice Hergott, director of the Musée d’Art Moderne; collectors Fernando Arriola and Marie-Cécile Zinsou; artists Kader Attia (who himself won the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2016) and Berlinde de Bruyckere; Karin Hindsbo, director of the Tate Modern; and Christophe Leribault, president of the Château de Versailles.
For the exhibition at MAM, Brognon Rollin presented the exhibition 5,376 years, 1,892 months, 1,110 days, 1,201 hours, which consisted of coin-pusher machines filled with sobriety tokens like those given to members of Alcoholics Anonymous when they achieve certain sobriety milestones.
“With Brognon Rollin, the Prix Marcel Duchamp recognises a demanding body of work that gives tangible form to what usually escapes our gaze: the passage of time spent waiting, addiction and inner resilience,” said Fabrice Hergott, director of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, in a statement. “The work they have created for the museum, presenting these fairground objects through a subtle installation, fundamentally shifts our perspective. It is a quiet yet tenacious statement on human vulnerability and the exploration of our inner lives.
In addition to the €35,000 awarded to the winner, ADIAF, the prize’s sponsor, provides an additional €40,000 in financial support to the nominees and their galleries, as well as a feature in a dedicated annual publication.
The Prix Marcel Duchamp exhibition will remain on view at MAM through February 7, 2027. It has been curated by Odile Burluraux, chief curator at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, and Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov, curator at the Centre Pompidou—Musée national d’art
moderne and head of the Bibliothèque Kandinsky.
