French authorities set curfews in several cities on Monday, including parts of central Paris, Lyon and Nice, following a weekend of protests and looting across the country.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said, “My determination to restore order is absolute,” as he ruled out a blanket curfew in Paris but not a state of emergency (Reuters).
The disorder began last month with students protesting over school conditions, but has since escalated to encompass a broader range of grievances (BBC).
Paris police on Monday said they had issued orders barring protests in certain areas of the French capital from 8pm local time and had issued a curfew around the Place de la Republique and Les Halles from 11pm (Reuters).
A curfew was announced in the southern city of Lyon from 9pm to 6am local time. In Nice, a curfew has been set that specifically targets young people (BBC).
