Britain’s Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has called for criminal investigations into three Islamic preachers accused of endorsing physical violence against wives in sermons.
Philp wrote to the Metropolitan Police and West Midlands Police, describing the reported remarks as “abhorrent” and arguing that cultural sensitivities should not prevent law enforcement from acting.
Yasin Munye, of Hackney Islamic Community Centre, allegedly said husbands could hit wives who refused intimacy. Mahamed AbdurRazaq, of Birmingham’s An-Noor Masjid and Community Centre, reportedly suggested admonishment first, followed by hitting that did not cause bruising or broken bones.
Aqeel Mahmood, of Birmingham’s Green Lane Masjid, was accused of saying husbands could discipline wives for “rebellion,” including leaving home without permission.
Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy separately asked the Crown Prosecution Service to pursue prosecutions. These demands do not establish that criminal offenses occurred.
The Metropolitan Police said on Sunday that it was assessing a complaint concerning the Hackney mosque. The supplied report did not confirm whether formal investigations had begun into all three cases.
Green Lane Masjid said it “unequivocally rejects violence, domestic abuse, coercion and all other forms of violence and abuse.” The other two centers reportedly did not respond to requests for comment.
