Introduced in 2001 by railway operator JR East, the character appears on millions of cards used for public transport, convenience stores and purchases. The announcement has prompted affection among fans, reflecting the mascot’s cultural significance and Japan’s enthusiasm for beloved characters and mascots.

Suica began as a railway fare payment card before expanding into convenience stores, vending machines and other businesses. More than 112 million cards have been issued, featuring Penguin, a character originally adopted from a children’s book. Its upcoming replacement has sparked public nostalgia, reflecting Japan’s oshikatsu fan culture, where spending on favourite characters and personalities generates substantial economic activity.
