Police have charged a 19-year-old in the Jamaica triple murder on Kidd Lane, an arson and shooting that killed two women and a toddler. The Jamaica Constabulary Force, the national police service, announced the charges on Thursday 15 October.
The attack burned a family home and sent residents fleeing their street. For visitors and the Jamaican diaspora in the United States, it shows where gang violence still bites, in inner-city districts rather than the resort towns.
Who Has Been Charged
Dante Davis, 19, of Kingston 13, was charged by detectives of the St Andrew South Criminal Investigations Branch, the Jamaica Observer reported. The Jamaica Gleaner said the Homicide Investigation Division also worked on the case.
He faces three counts of murder, plus conspiracy to commit murder, arson and three firearm offences. As with any suspect, he is presumed innocent until a court rules otherwise.
What Happened on Kidd Lane
Late on Friday 9 October, at about 11:45 p.m., residents of Kidd Lane heard explosions and found a house on fire. Armed men had opened fire and set the home alight before shooting at a neighbouring house, the Gleaner reported.
Police found a 39-year-old woman shot dead at the rear of the property. Firefighters later found the remains of a 30-year-old woman and her one-year-old son, while her eight-year-old daughter escaped unhurt.
Where Kidd Lane Is
Kidd Lane is a street in Kingston 13, a postal district in western Kingston, off Spanish Town Road in the parish of St Andrew. It sits close to Bowens Road, and police tie both communities to the same gang conflict.
The area lies in St Andrew South West, the constituency of Dr Angella Brown-Burke, the Gleaner reported. It is a dense, working-class part of the capital, far from the tourist beaches of the north coast.
The Gang Violence Behind the Case
Police linked the killings to gang violence in the Kidd Lane and Bowens Road communities. National Security Minister Horace Chang called it an escalating conflict inside one gang, after police operations had disrupted criminal networks there.
On Saturday 10 October, Prime Minister Holness called the attack an assault on the nation. He said his government had halved the murder rate and cut active gangs by more than half, but organised criminals remain.
The Hunt for Suspects
In the Jamaica triple murder, police named 11 people of interest on Saturday 10 October and told them to report to Hunts Bay Police Station. A person of interest is not a charged suspect.
Davis was one of four people of interest in custody before the charge, the Gleaner reported. A police source told the paper that one suspect died in a confrontation with security forces on Wellington Road.
What It Means for You
The Jamaica triple murder happened far from the north-coast resorts, but US visitors should still read the State Department’s travel advisory for the island. Families visiting relatives in Kingston should check local news before entering inner-city districts.
For Jamaicans in the United States, the case shows that falling murder figures coexist with attacks like this one. Tips go to 119 or any police station, and the Paulwell murder life sentence is another recent Jamaican court outcome.
What Is Not Known
No court date has been set, and police said it is still being finalised. It is not known whether further charges are coming against the other people of interest.
Police have not publicly said what triggered the Jamaica triple murder or who fired the shots. The Gleaner said the police statement did not say how many people of interest remain at large.
