GRANADA was shaken by two earthquakes in quick succession on Sunday morning, two months after the area was hit by a magnitude 5 quake.
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded a magnitude 1.9 tremor northeast of Vegas del Genil at 8.38am, followed three minutes later by a magnitude 2.8 quake west of Cajar at 8.41am.
Both were felt in around a dozen towns across the province, including Granada city.

The Vegas del Genil tremor struck three kilometres below the surface. The IGN’s revised calculation puts the Cajar quake at a depth of zero kilometres, and shallow quakes can be felt even when they release relatively little energy.
The first tremor was felt most strongly in Cenes de la Vega, Churriana de la Vega and Ogijares, and more lightly in Armilla, La Zubia, Maracena and Padul.
Early reports on the Vegas del Genil quake showed no damage. The IGN has not yet issued a damage assessment for the Cajar quake.

The IGN also logged an earlier tremor southeast of Armilla at 8.10am.
Granada’s metropolitan area is seismically active because of its active faults and the meeting of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
Sunday’s tremors will bring back memories of the night of August 15. A magnitude 5 quake with its epicentre in Alhendin struck at 1.04am and was felt as far away as Murcia, Madrid and Extremadura.
It damaged buildings but caused no casualties.
Five churches in Granada were damaged inside, and the city council dealt with 445 incidents.
It was followed days later by a magnitude 4.8 quake and several aftershocks of up to 4.2, which left at least three people with minor injuries.
