Australia opens military enlistment to 6 countries — what South Africans must know

• Australia announced that citizens of six countries can now enlist in the Australian Defence Force under specific conditions
• The eligible nations include New Zealand, the UK, the US, Canada, Papua New Guinea, and the Republic of Ireland
• South Africa is not on the list, and local law makes joining a foreign military without government approval a criminal offence

Australia has opened the doors of its military to foreign nationals, but the opportunity comes with strict rules — and South Africans are not among those invited.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) confirmed that citizens from six countries are now eligible to enlist: New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Papua New Guinea, and the Republic of Ireland. The move is designed to address recruitment shortages within the ADF, which comprises the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army, and the Royal Australian Air Force.

Who qualifies and how

There are two pathways into the ADF for foreign nationals. The first is standard enlistment, open to citizens of the eligible countries who hold Australian permanent residency or, for New Zealanders, a Subclass 444 visa. Applicants must have lived continuously in Australia for at least 12 months before applying and must not have served in any foreign military within the previous two years. Successful recruits are also required to apply for Australian citizenship, or commit to doing so within 90 days of beginning service.

The second pathway, known as Overseas Lateral Entry, targets experienced military personnel looking to transfer their skills directly into the ADF. To qualify, applicants must have completed at least three years of full-time military service, must have left their previous force less than three years ago, be under 55 years old at the time of visa nomination, and demonstrate competent English proficiency.

General eligibility for all ADF applicants also requires passing a medical and fitness assessment, holding at least a Year 10 qualification with passes in English and Mathematics, and having a fully verifiable background covering the past 10 years.

What this means for South Africans

South Africa does not appear on Australia's list of eligible countries, which means South African citizens cannot apply for standard ADF enlistment under this scheme.

Even those holding dual citizenship with one of the six eligible nations face a significant legal obstacle at home. South Africa's Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act 15 of 1998 prohibits any South African citizen or permanent resident from serving in a foreign military without prior authorisation from the National Conventional Arms Control Committee. Serving without that permission is a criminal offence, and penalties can include prosecution, heavy fines, imprisonment, or the loss of South African citizenship.

Anyone considering this route is strongly advised to seek legal guidance before taking any steps toward enlisting abroad.
