Agartala, October 15, 2026: Tripura has the talent to make its mark on the global technology landscape, and the achievements of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Agartala stand as evidence of the state’s growing capabilities in technical education, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Thursday.
Addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the institute’s permanent campus at Mohanpur in the presence of Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, Nath said IIIT Agartala had made encouraging progress in academic excellence, industry exposure and student placements within a relatively short period of its establishment.
The institute, which commenced its journey on June 25, 2018, has already seen five batches complete their academic programmes, comprising a total of 110 students. According to Nath, the average placement rate across these batches has exceeded 80 per cent, while the first batch recorded 100 per cent placements.
Highlighting the professional achievements of its graduates, the minister said the highest annual salary package recorded so far was Rs 21.99 lakh. Companies including Amazon, Red Hat and Media.net have also been associated with employment opportunities for students, reflecting the institute’s growing connection with the technology industry.

Nath described the proposed permanent campus, to be developed over 50 acres of land, as an important milestone that would create greater scope for academic expansion, advanced research and technological innovation.
Emphasising the need to think beyond geographical boundaries, the minister urged students to develop technologies and solutions capable of making a global impact. He said young innovators from Agartala should aspire to create products that could find applications in technology hubs such as Bengaluru, Singapore, London and Silicon Valley.
At the same time, he stressed that educational institutions must remain connected to the developmental needs of Tripura. Students should be encouraged to apply their technical knowledge to address local challenges while building solutions that could compete in international markets.
Calling for closer collaboration between academia and industry, Nath advocated stronger partnerships with technology companies, research institutions, data organisations and international agencies. He also stressed the need to expand internship opportunities, live industry projects, mentorship programmes, innovation challenges and entrepreneurship initiatives to prepare students for the demands of the modern economy.
The minister said the permanent campus should foster a culture of curiosity, critical thinking and experimentation, enabling students to question conventional approaches and transform innovative ideas into practical solutions.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by Lt. Gen. (Dr.) K. Himalay Singh (Retd.), Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT Agartala; Brishaketu Debbarma, Minister of State for Industries and Commerce; and Prof. (Dr.) Abhay Kumar, Director of IIIT Agartala, among others.
