An alleged human egg trafficking network in Turkey offered to find donors for clients seeking blond, blue-eyed children, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday.
Clients requested “blond hair, blue eyes,” and organizers assured them they could find donors to match, investigators allege.
A woman identified as Hacer T., described as one of the organizers, allegedly photographed and filmed donors and showed the images to prospective buyers.
Her boyfriend, a former pharmacist, allegedly supplied medication used in the procedures.
Doctors examined women and started them on medication before organizers arranged their travel to clinics in northern Cyprus, Albania and Georgia for egg retrieval, prosecutors allege.
Investigators identified 41 women who allegedly sold their eggs through the network. Donors made a total of 811 trips to the three destinations, Anadolu reported.
The women were reportedly paid €60 to €80 per egg, while organizers charged fertility clinics around €100 each.
Police identified approximately €2 million in financial transactions linked to the operation.
The investigation began after two tips and led to raids across 14 provinces.
Prosecutors on Thursday asked a court to jail eight suspects pending trial and release 36 others under court supervision, the Demirören news agency reported.
At least three doctors were among those detained. The case concerns suspected criminal organization offenses and trafficking in organs and tissues.
