A 24-year-old man from Chandina upazila in Cumilla has reportedly been killed in the Russia-Ukraine war, with his family receiving the news from one of his friends in Russia by phone on Saturday.
Mohammad Sagor, son of Kabir Hossain of Chhaykot area under Chandina municipality, was the youngest of three sisters and two brothers. His death has cast a pall of grief over the family.
According to family members and local sources, Sagor went to Russia in mid-2025 with the help of a manager at a rod and cement shop, spending around Tk6 lakh. He subsequently took a job at a bakery, earning approximately Tk70,000 a month.
While working there, he became acquainted with a Bangladeshi broker who allegedly lured him with the promise of a one-time payment of Tk30 lakh in exchange for joining the Russian army.
Sagor went to participate in the Russia-Ukraine war in May this year. His family lost contact with him after that.
His uncle, Abdul Awal, said Sagor had informed him that he intended to leave his bakery job and join the Russian army. Awal said he had advised his nephew against the decision.
He alleged that a broker in Russia had misled Sagor with false information and facilitated his recruitment as a soldier in the war.
Sagor’s father, Kabir Hossain, said he had previously run a vegetable business but had been suffering from various illnesses for a long time. He had borrowed money to send his son abroad.
“I have not been able to speak to my son for around four to five months. Now I am hearing that he is no longer alive,” he said.
Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Ashraful Haque said the authorities were unaware of the matter and would look into it.
