- The Springboks face a selection headache ahead of their four-Test end-of-year tour in November, 2026
- Eben Etzebeth sustained a lower limb injury, with the full extent still to be confirmed by medical staff
- RG Snyman, Kwagga Smith and Cheslin Kolbe are among the players who could miss the November fixtures
Rassie Erasmus faces a testing selection period ahead of the Springboks' four-Test November campaign, with as many as four key players potentially unavailable due to injury.
The squad is due to regroup at the end of October before travelling north to compete in the concluding round of the Nations Championship.
The fixtures see South Africa face Italy on 7 November at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, France on 13 November at the Stade de France in Paris, and Ireland on 21 November at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, followed by a finals weekend at Twickenham Stadium in London between 27 and 29 November.
Etzebeth injury awaiting further assessment
The Sharks confirmed that lock Eben Etzebeth sustained a lower limb injury and that a further medical examination was required to determine the full extent of the damage. No additional updates have been released since the initial announcement, leaving his availability for the tour uncertain.
Flanker Kwagga Smith and lock RG Snyman have both been absent throughout the current season due to serious knee injuries. Neither player is expected to recover in time to feature in November.
Winger Cheslin Kolbe rounds out the injury concerns after breaking his jaw during the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series. His participation in the tour is considered doubtful at this stage.
How the finals weekend works
The Nations Championship format means that results from the November pool matches contribute to a final ranking for both the southern and northern hemisphere conferences.
Teams finish in positions one through six within their respective conferences, and the finals weekend pairs each team against their direct equivalent rank from the opposite hemisphere, sixth against sixth, fifth against fifth, and so on, down to a Grand Final between the two top-ranked sides.
South Africa's ability to mount a title challenge may ultimately depend on how many frontline players the medical staff are able to clear for duty before the squad departs at the end of October.
