Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief — Sunday, October 18, 2026

Rio gives you a Sunday made for slowing down.

TODAY’S PICK — WATERFRONT MUSEUM

Museu do Amanhã on Praça Mauá

Museu do Amanhã, the science museum on the bay in Praça Mauá, is open today from 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5 pm. The building itself is worth the trip on a warm day.

Ticket prices change, so check the museum’s website before you go. Arriving at opening time usually means a calmer visit.

Praça Mauá sits in the port zone, a short ride from Centro. Public transport is easier than a taxi on a Sunday with seafront traffic.

Pair it with the CCBB in Centro, which is free, if you want a second stop.

After dark, ride-hailing is the safer way home from the port zone.

OUTDOORS — BEACH FIRST

A beach morning before the clouds build

Ipanema and Copacabana both work well early, with soft sun and a yellow flag expected. Set up near lifeguard posts and swim close to shore.

Walk the seafront ciclovia before lunch; Sunday is car-free on much of the orla, so it is made for bikes and long walks.

Keep an eye on the sky after 3 pm, when cloud cover increases and the small shower chance becomes real.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — CENTRO & LAPA

Quiet corners before the samba crowd

Café do Alto in Lapa opens early and works for a laptop session before noon, with strong coffee and simple breakfast plates.

Curto Café on Rua Buenos Aires in Centro is a good second option, with wifi and a quieter weekday-warrior crowd on Sunday afternoon.

Both are near the metro, so you can move easily afterwards without carrying work gear all day.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — MUSEUM AFTERNOON

Museu do Amanhã or CCBB for a quieter Sunday

Museu do Amanhã in Praça Mauá opens Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, (last entry 5 pm); check the museum’s website for current ticket prices. The building itself is worth the trip on a warm day.

CCBB in Centro opens from 9 am to 8 pm and is free, making it easy to dip in without committing to a full afternoon.

These are the two best indoor alternatives if the weather turns, and both sit in central Rio.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Lapa and a slower Zona Sul

Sunday nights are quieter than Saturdays, so decide where you are heading before you leave.

In Lapa, the usual Sunday samba circles start early evening on Avenida Mem de Sá, with Rio Scenarium a reliable but busier option.

If you prefer the Zona Sul, head to Botafogo for quieter bars along Rua Nelson Mandela instead of fighting the Centro crowd.

Use ride-hailing for late returns rather than walking between neighbourhoods.

Ride-hailing is the easier option late at night.

CCBB opens 9am to 8pm and is free. Museu do Amanhã opens 10am to 6pm; check the museum’s website for current ticket prices.

Museu Nacional de Belas Artes opens 10am to 6pm and is free. Parque Lage and Jardim Botânico are also open today.

Cloud builds in the afternoon with a small shower chance, so plan the beach early and keep indoor options for later.
