Colombo, Oct. 15 (Daily Mirror) - Minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas of the Nilwala River floodplain across six Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions during the next 24 hours following significant rainfall in the river basin’s upper and middle catchment areas, the Irrigation Department warned.
The areas at risk are Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda and Matara.
The warning was issued based on prevailing rainfall conditions and an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauging stations maintained by the Irrigation Department within the Nilwala River Basin.
Residents in the affected areas and motorists travelling through them have been urged to exercise extreme caution due to the potential flood risk.
Disaster management authorities have also been requested to take the necessary precautionary measures in response to the situation.
