Fourteen people were killed and at least 28 injured when a speeding truck ploughed into several devotees before crashing into a temple's entrance gate in Gwalior district, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Sunday, police said.
A wall of the temple collapsed under the impact of the collision, they said, adding that two to four of the injured people were in a critical condition.
As per information available, the truck had been stopped on the road but broke through the barricades, lost control and hurtled down the slope before crashing into the temple's outer wall and gate. Devotees walking along the road were crushed under the vehicle.
Senior police official Dharmveer Singh told ANI that many pilgrims were travelling to the Sheetla Mata temple when the truck lost control.
He said the pilgrims were travelling to the temple in large numbers. "The road coming from the Chhinor side has a steep slope where heavy traffic is restricted. Around 1.30 am, a truck loaded with paddy was stopped there. It broke through the police barricades, suddenly lost control, came down, and crashed into the outer wall and gate of the temple," Singh said.
Gwalior District Collector Ruchika Chauhan said the circumstances in which the truck entered the restricted stretch leading to the temple would be investigated, as barricades and a police checkpoint had been installed.
