Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlights Malaysia’s commitment to boosting security cooperation with ASEAN and dialogue partners to tackle transnational crimes.
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will continue to strengthen security cooperation with ASEAN and its dialogue partners to address increasingly complex transnational crime threats, including cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking.
In a Facebook post, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said such cooperation requires more effective cross-border enforcement actions, supported by information sharing, operational collaboration, and capacity building.
He made these remarks after leading the Malaysian delegation to four consultation sessions held alongside the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) in Makati, the Philippines.
The four sessions were the 16th AMMTC Plus Three Consultation, the 13th AMMTC Plus China Consultation, the 11th AMMTC Plus Japan Consultation, and the 7th AMMTC Plus Republic of Korea Consultation.
During the 13th AMMTC Plus China Consultation, Saifuddin Nasution served as co-chair alongside the Assistant Minister of Public Security of the People’s Republic of China, Lyu Wuqin.
“This role serves as another significant avenue for Malaysia to bolster cooperation between ASEAN and China, particularly in addressing security challenges and transnational crime,” he said.
According to him, discussions across all consultation sessions focused on the evolving nature of transnational crime threats, as well as efforts to enhance enforcement capabilities through closer collaboration.
Key threats highlighted included cybercrime, online fraud, drug trafficking, and organised crime, all of which are becoming increasingly complex and transcending national borders.
Saifuddin Nasution also said such threats require a response that transcends borders, therefore, the close relations between ASEAN and its dialogue partners must be translated into more effective enforcement cooperation.
He added that Malaysia will continue to play an active role in strengthening regional and international security cooperation to ensure peace, stability, and the well-being of the people.
