According to international media reports, including the BBC, four Canadian service members were killed and dozens injured in a major fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta last Saturday.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said a "violent, fast-moving fire" swept through the Canadian Armed Forces base.
He confirmed that four service members had died and that their next of kin had been notified.
The Department of National Defence reported that a fire ignited within the CFB's training area at approximately 4:00 p.m. (local time) on October 17, 2026.
The fire spread rapidly beyond the boundaries of the training area, while military and civilian emergency services responded quickly to control the blaze and to support those affected by this tragic event.
