South African startup KhayaHR is building an AI-first workforce platform for the country’s frontline economy, and has already signed up more than 12,000 workers since launching in May.
Founded by Jacques Roux, KhayaHR gives workers a portable digital workforce passport. Employers can use it to find, assess, hire and then manage frontline staff in one place.
“Most recruitment technology assumes that candidates already have formal CVs, established digital histories and easily verifiable employment records,” Roux told Disrupt Africa.
“That assumption excludes many frontline workers. Their work experience may be informal, references fragmented, certificates stored as photographs or paper documents, and availability known only through personal networks or WhatsApp groups.”
The worker passport holds identity and right-to-work confirmation, skills, experience, references, employer recommendations, certificates, availability, and optional voice or video introductions. Workers cannot publish a profile until their identity and right to work in South Africa have been confirmed.
On the employer side, Khaya AI turns a natural-language hiring requirement into a structured search of the available workforce.
“An employer can describe the role, location and experience they need, and Khaya AI converts that into a structured search,” said Roux. “Employers can then assess real profile evidence, connect with suitable workers and manage employment through KhayaHR’s HR and payroll system.”
Khaya AI also works as an on-demand HR assistant for households and small businesses that do not have an internal HR department. It offers practical guidance on onboarding, contracts, leave, pay, UIF and managing workers correctly.
“This is an important part of the model – KhayaHR does not stop when a worker is found,” Roux said. “Once a worker is hired, many households and small businesses have no affordable HR support to help them manage contracts, leave, payroll, UIF and everyday employment questions correctly. We help smaller employers move from recruitment into responsible, structured employment.”
The platform also includes KhayaHR Academy, which offers short, mobile-friendly certificate courses. Certificates earned there are added automatically to the worker’s profile.
“That creates a direct link between learning, verified evidence and employability,” said Roux. “The longer-term objective is to create a complete workforce operating system connecting worker identity, skills development, recruitment, accessible HR support and ongoing employment management.”
KhayaHR is entirely self-funded and run by the husband-and-wife team. Roux leads product, technology and commercial strategy, while his wife manages most day-to-day operations and worker-facing activity.
“We have deliberately kept the team small while building and validating the platform,” he said.
Workers have taken to the platform quickly. KhayaHR now has a live, publicly discoverable workforce spanning all nine South African provinces and 50 occupations. It has also launched its first five Academy courses and an integrated HR and payroll platform.
“Worker uptake has been significantly faster than we initially expected,” said Roux. “The strongest demand has come from domestic work, housekeeping, cleaning, care, hospitality, retail, general labour and related frontline roles.”
KhayaHR competes with conventional job boards, specialist domestic-worker marketplaces, recruitment agencies, HR consultancies and standalone HR or payroll products. Roux said its point of difference is bringing everything together in one platform.
“Our distinction is combining the worker passport, identity and right-to-work requirements, AI-assisted discovery, on-demand HR guidance, the Academy and employment-management tools,” he said.
The startup earns revenue in several ways. Employers pay to unlock and connect with workers, and they subscribe to the HR and payroll platform on a per-employee basis. Workers can buy Academy courses, and larger employers can engage KhayaHR for targeted sourcing, readiness and placement programmes.
“We are generating early revenue, but the business remains in its initial commercialisation stage,” Roux said. “We are currently reinvesting in product development, verification, worker acquisition and employer adoption rather than optimising for short-term profitability.”
The rapid growth on the worker side has brought its own problems.
“The largest challenge has been balancing rapid worker adoption with employer demand,” said Roux. “Building a workforce supply base has proven faster than changing employer recruitment behaviour. The next commercial challenge is translating that worker adoption into consistent employer demand, successful placements and ongoing use of the HR platform at scale.”
Verification is also demanding work.
“Maintaining trust means reviewing identity, right-to-work and supporting evidence carefully rather than allowing every registration to become a public profile,” he said.
Designing for a mobile-first audience with different levels of literacy, data access and digital confidence has also shaped the product.
“This has required us to simplify onboarding, use WhatsApp extensively and continually rethink how workers complete profiles and learning content,” Roux said. “Making AI-supported HR guidance simple, useful and responsible is another important challenge. Small employers need practical answers in plain language, while the platform must still recognise when a matter requires professional or legal intervention.”
“As a self-funded two-person business, prioritisation is constant. We have had to build the technology, operate the platform, support workers and develop the commercial market simultaneously.”
For now, KhayaHR is focused on growing employer adoption and placements in South Africa. Once that is working, it plans to expand into selected Southern African markets.
“Once the model has repeatable employer demand and sustainable unit economics, we intend to expand through local partnerships,” said Roux. “We do not want to copy South African employment rules into other countries; identity, right-to-work and employment requirements would need to be adapted for each market.”
