By Zoila Palma: Italy is preparing to deploy 500 military personnel to Milan following a weekend of violent protests that saw demonstrators clash with police, damage property and attempt to occupy public spaces.
The move comes as authorities in Italy and France strengthen security measures amid continued unrest and concerns about further demonstrations, Fox reports.
Violence erupted in Milan on Saturday, October 17, as hundreds of demonstrators reportedly threw firecrackers, glass bottles and metal barriers at police near the city’s historic cathedral. Officers attempting to contain the clashes were forced to retreat.
In Paris, police also faced large crowds during demonstrations, with officers using crowd-control equipment as they attempted to prevent advancing protesters from overwhelming security lines.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the planned deployment of 500 troops to Milan, while the country’s deputy prime minister indicated that personnel would be granted expanded police powers.
The unrest comes as demonstrations in both countries have been linked to grievances over the cost of living, low wages, high rents and public services.
