Several Caribbean cricket legends added silverware to their trophy cabinets as the West Indies Champions franchise won the third edition of the World Championship of Legends on Sunday.
This T20 tournament brings together veteran players, many of whom are officially retired from the professional circuit, for a competition played in the UAE. It must be noted that this is still a franchise cricket tournament with privately owned teams, although each club bears the name of a cricketing nation.
The final saw the Maroon-clad legends face the England Champions at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Many of those taking the field for the West Indian team were former T20 World Cup winners from the 2012 and 2016 squads.
Having won the toss, legends captain Chris Gayle sent the Brits in to bat first. The Windies were stingy with run-scoring for most of the affair, with West Indies and T20 circuit legend Dwayne Bravo finishing with figures of 3/21. All of the other bowlers finished with at least one wicket each.
A well-played 60 runs off just 39 deliveries by Moeen Ali, who is still actively playing professionally, and 38 runs off 29 deliveries by Owais Shah saw England post 159/7, meaning the veterans in Maroon would require 160 for victory.
The West Indian charge was led by Trinidadian Lendl Simmons and Chadwick Walton. After Gayle lost his wicket for 21 runs, Walton (58 not out) and Simmons (77 not out) stitched together a 123-run partnership to give the Windies Champions their first-ever WCL title.
