By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have formally arrested and charged two men in connection with the brutal murder of Wilson Perez, whose body was discovered with severe chop wounds in Carmelita Village, Orange Walk District, earlier this month.
On Thursday, October 22, police confirmed that 23-year-old Belizean labourer Alex Anthony Banner and 22-year-old Belizean labourer Darnell Emil Rhaburn Sergio were jointly charged with murder in connection with the October 12 killing.
Perez was found dead on October 13 after relatives organized a search when he failed to return home the previous night. He had reportedly left his residence around 10:30 p.m., telling family members he was heading to the village football field.
His body was subsequently discovered bearing multiple chop wounds. Sources previously told Breaking Belize News that Perez had been decapitated, while other media reports indicated that portions of his body had also been burned.
Perez was known for his involvement in youth football and served as president of the New Horizon Sporting Club, which helped organize the Orange Walk Under-13 Mundialito tournament.
Police have not publicly established a motive for the killing. The two accused men will face prosecution for murder as the case proceeds through the courts.
