Portugal generated more than 70% of its electricity from renewable sources in September, continuing its progress towards cleaner energy.

According to figures reported by the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association, renewables accounted for 70.8% of electricity produced during the month.
Solar, wind and hydropower all contributed to the total, with renewable energy continuing to play a major role in the country’s electricity system.
And September was not an isolated result.
Between January and September, renewable sources accounted for 74.1% of Portugal’s electricity production, placing the country fourth among European countries with the highest renewable shares.
Only Norway, Denmark and Austria ranked ahead.
Meeting demand
There were also periods when Portugal was able to meet its entire electricity demand through renewable generation.
During September, that happened for a total of eight hours. Over the first nine months of the year, Portugal recorded 715 such hours across various days. That’s equivalent to almost 30 full days.
However, the figures don’t mean that more than 70% of all electricity consumed in Portugal during September came from renewable sources.
According to national grid operator REN, domestic renewable production covered 52% of electricity consumption that month, while imports accounted for another 35%.
Consumption
Electricity demand has also been increasing.
REN reported record consumption for the first nine months of 2026, with September demand rising by 6.8% compared with the same month last year.
So while Portugal is making considerable progress in renewable electricity production, it is also facing the challenge of meeting growing demand.
For now, the latest figures show just how important renewable energy has become to the country’s electricity supply.
