New Delhi, Oct 13: A delegation of women BJP MPs is likely to meet President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday to seek her intervention over the sacking of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) following an inquiry into sexual harassment allegations against him.
“Congress leader Rahul Gandhi only talks about ‘Smash the Patriarchy’. When it comes to taking action, he goes silent. A delegation of women MPs of the BJP will call on President Droupadi Murmu today and raise the issue, seeking her intervention in the matter,” a party source said.
The proposed meeting comes a day after the BJP Mahila Morcha staged protests outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi and at several locations in Himachal Pradesh, demanding that the party expel Akoijam, the Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur.
Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi also joined several BJP women MPs and party workers in the protest in Delhi on Monday.
The Delhi Police registered an FIR against Akoijam on October 11 following a complaint lodged by JNU’s chief security officer.
The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which cover sexual harassment and acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty, among other offences.
Police said an investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, Akoijam has described the action against him as a “witch hunt”, alleging that he was not given an opportunity to respond to the findings of the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
He has also claimed that the police complaint was intended to intimidate him for raising concerns about Manipur and challenging what he described as the erosion of constitutional norms and institutional independence.
Questioning the basis of the complaint, the MP accused JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit of misrepresenting his cooperation with the ICC inquiry.
“She is lying, one after another,” he alleged, accusing the university administration of using the proceedings to harass him and suppress his political voice.
JNU dismissed Akoijam last week after an inquiry into the sexual harassment allegations found him guilty. He was a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the university’s School of Social Sciences.
According to reports, at least 11 female students filed sexual harassment complaints against him in May 2026.
The allegations and the university’s findings remain distinct from the police investigation, which is ongoing.
