Sophie Cunningham has never been particularly interested in keeping her opinions to herself. The Indiana Fever guard made that clear again this week, responding to criticism of her place within the organization as she approaches another significant offseason.
During an episode of her "No Hesitation" podcast with Drew Hanlen, Cunningham addressed a column by The Athletic's Candace Buckner arguing that Indiana should move on from the veteran guard.
Her response was direct.
"I know what I bring to the table. It's not always in the stat sheet," Cunningham said.
She ended her response with two words: "Suck it."
The exchange quickly became another talking point surrounding one of the WNBA's most recognizable players. However, Cunningham's future involves more than a disagreement with a columnist.
Indiana has an important roster decision approaching.
Sophie Cunningham defends her value to Indiana Fever
Cunningham averaged 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists during the 2026 regular season. She also connected on 41.9 percent of her three-point attempts, giving Indiana an experienced perimeter shooter capable of stretching opposing defenses. Those numbers do not necessarily reflect every aspect of her contribution.
Sophie Cunningham and Drew Hanlen shut down the Athletic hate on Sophie. Sophie says the majority of these people have never picked up a ball in their life and are thirsty to be relevant and get attention. The people who say she is not effective can suck it. https://t.co/ZnqydLQZsm

Cunningham has established herself as a physical defender, energetic reserve and vocal presence on a team featuring Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. Hanlen defended her statistical impact during the podcast discussion, pointing to her shooting efficiency and production compared with other WNBA reserves.
Buckner's column raised a different concern.
The Athletic columnist argued that Cunningham's public comments, particularly regarding transgender participation in women's sports, had generated unnecessary controversy around the Fever.
That distinction matters because the disagreement involves both basketball performance and the attention Cunningham attracts away from the court. Cunningham has maintained that she will continue expressing her views.

What happens next for Sophie Cunningham and the Fever?
Cunningham returned to Indiana for the 2026 season on a one-year contract worth $665,000. With that agreement expiring, she is approaching unrestricted free agency. The Fever must determine whether retaining her is the best use of their available resources.
Indiana's postseason ended with a first-round loss to the Las Vegas Aces, leaving the organization with decisions involving several important contributors. Cunningham's outside shooting gives her a clear basketball argument for remaining with the franchise. Her established relationship with Indiana's core also provides continuity.
The question is how aggressively the Fever will pursue another agreement and what Cunningham might command on the open market. Her latest comments make one thing clear: She does not intend to let outside criticism determine how she approaches her career.
Whether that career continues in Indiana remains unresolved. For Fever fans, the coming offseason could be every bit as interesting as Cunningham's latest podcast appearance.
