Reports of illegal fishing at local lakes and park waterways have increased in the City of Joondalup.
The city said it received four reports of unlawful fishing in the past month, most of which were at Neil Hawkins Park in Joondalup. Rangers attended and investigated where appropriate.
Residents are also posting an increase in the activity on social media, including at Sir James McCusker Park in Iluka during the recent school holidays.
Updated signage was installed at the park in August, which the city said was to better reflect the wording of the local government and public property local law.
The signs warn there is a modified penalty of $350 for taking, injuring or killing fauna — or attempting to — on or above local government property.

Rangers have responded to four instances of children fishing at the Iluka park in the past year but did not find the alleged fishers on arrival.
A duck was reportedly hooked by fishing line at the park in July.
According to the city, there had been a noticeable increase in fishing at local lakes and park waterways and rangers continued to patrol known locations and respond to reports.
It said rangers generally adopted an educational approach in the first instance and no infringements related to fishing offences had been issued during the 2026-27 financial year.
Mayor Daniel Kingston said the city took illegal fishing complaints seriously and responded.
“We want our parks and waterways to remain safe and enjoyable for everyone, while also protecting local wildlife,” he said.
“Rangers continue to patrol known locations, investigate reports and provide education where needed.
“We encourage anyone who witnesses fishing in local lakes or park waterways to report it to the city so appropriate action can be taken.”

The city plans to continue its current approach of proactive and reactive patrols over the summer holidays, with particular attention on locations with higher levels of community concern.
Fishing at local lakes and park waterways should be reported to the city on 9400 4000.
