The 13-year-old son of Halle Berry and ex-husband Olivier Martinez testified for nearly three hours Monday in a court hearing regarding a domestic violence restraining order request.
The actress — who has been accused by Martinez of abusing Maceo — was joined in Los Angeles Superior Court by her legal team and her fiancé, Van Hunt.
Martinez, who arrived with Maceo and was joined by his own legal team, appeared to glare at Berry upon arrival. She returned the look while inside the courtroom.
Berry seemed to be in good spirits, though at times she appeared to be worried and anxious. The hearing was described by eyewitnesses as “icy.”
Judge Shelley Kaufman began the hearing by calling Maceo to the stand to testify. She ordered everyone out of the courtroom to ensure the teen’s testimony would remain sealed.
Maceo — who was dressed casually in a graphic T-shirt, shorts and Crocs — testified for nearly three hours.
He did not engage with his mother while at court.
The hearing remains ongoing, and it may continue on Tuesday.
Martinez, 60, was granted a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Berry, also 60, on Oct. 1 after alleging she attacked their son during a Sept. 26 incident.
The French actor alleged that Berry — to whom he was married from July 2013 until their separation two years later — choked Maceo after an argument over virtual reality goggles.
Martinez accused the “Monster’s Ball” star of calling their son “such an idiot” for playing a game on the headset and alleged that there have been multiple instances of abuse over the past year and a half.
He asked for sole legal and physical custody of Maceo.
The judge restricted Berry’s contact with the teen and limited her visitation rights.
Berry, for her part, has vehemently denied the allegations. Her daughter, Nahla Aubry, 18, echoed that stance in a court declaration, stating she was “shocked” by the claims and had never seen her mom act aggressively toward her half-brother.
Berry, in turn, asked the judge to deny Martinez’s restraining order request, lift the temporary restrictions and reinstate 50-50 custody.
She also asked the judge to preserve her authority to make final decisions about Maceo’s education and mental health treatment when the parents disagreed.
Furthermore, the Oscar winner accused her former spouse of escalating their bitter custody dispute, interfering with Maceo’s educational and therapeutic needs, and turning their son against her.
She added that she has historically been the parent responsible for enforcing discipline and pursuing behavioral intervention.
Although Berry strongly opposed Maceo’s involvement in the case, Kaufman ruled that he would be allowed to testify, though she limited his testimony to the claims made in his father’s restraining order request.
Berry and Martinez were declared legally single in December 2016, before finalizing their divorce in August 2023.
