Virgil van Dijk Hits Liverpool Captain Milestone as Brentford Win Underlines Florian Wirtz Progress
Milestones are easy to dress up in football. Round numbers, captaincy records, ceremonial applause. What matters is whether the team wins, and Liverpool did. Virgil van Dijk marked his 150th Premier League game as club captain with a 2-1 victory at Brentford, a result that carried more weight than the personal landmark.
Brentford had not been beaten at home since February, and that tells you enough about the assignment. Liverpool went behind to a Keane Lewis-Potter header, stayed composed, then turned the match through Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak. It was not flawless, but it was controlled when it needed to be, and mature when the game became awkward.
Van Dijk, as usual, went straight to the point. “I help with everything I can, on and off the pitch,” he said. “Leading by example is how it starts but obviously it is not always easy coming to a different country and adapting as soon as possible, but they did well.
“Keep learning, keep going and keep wanting to be important, and that is definitely the case. To be the club captain of Liverpool FC is such a big honour.
“It isn’t something I thought about because it was far too out of reach, but to be in that bracket is amazing. It is an absolute honoir and I am really blessed.”
Van Dijk leadership remains central
He was handed the role permanently in 2023 and has since captained Liverpool to major silverware. That part is straightforward. The less obvious part is how he keeps the team settled during difficult spells in games like this one. Brentford make matches ugly, direct and physical. Liverpool had to deal with that before they could start playing.
Van Dijk made clear there was no panic at half-time despite trailing. “Brentford were 1-0 up but we were doing pretty well. We dealt with their danger pretty well. We were 1-0 down but the message [at half time] was play around it and make sure we are ready in transition because they are good in set-pieces.
“[We needed to] stay patient. Be aware of their strengths being set-pieces and counter-attacks, and make the right decisions with the ball and get the ball into the box.
“I think we did that second half pretty well. Let’s hope [the win means we’re becoming more resilient]. I didn’t know it was that long [since Brentford had lost at home], but it is a good sign.
“It is a very tough place to come and it showed. Teams that come here, including ourselves over the years, they always have it tough. I am happy that we took the three points.”
That is the game in plain terms. No melodrama, no mythology. Liverpool adjusted, avoided getting dragged into a scrap they could not control, and waited for the right moments.
Brentford win matters more than milestone
Brentford finished with nine men after the dismissals of Yehor Yarmoliuk and Vitaly Janelt, but Liverpool still had to do the serious part first. They had to stay calm, move the ball quickly and make the pressure count. They managed all three.

So yes, Van Dijk reached 150 league games as Liverpool captain. Good achievement, deserved too. But the important detail is this, Liverpool left a difficult ground with three points.
