Lavushimanda District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Beatus Nshenda has observed that most learners from rural schools end up choosing wrong careers because of lack of exposure to other professions.
Mr Nshenda says the limitation in career choices by most school leavers is because they chose to become like the people they interact within their localities.
He was speaking today when he addressed learners during the first career’s Day for Mununga Day Secondary School held at the school.
“Some of you don’t even know what you want to become when you complete school because you are not exposed to other professions,” he said.
And Mr Nshenda said Careers Day in schools is an important event that gives learners exposure to diverse professionals.
He says careers day also connects classroom learning to real world jobs and inspires learners to early career planning.
The DEBS further said the purpose of careers day is to help learners understand the different career opportunities so that they make proper choices in future and avoid ending up in wrong careers where they may be frustrated.
He added that education is the foundation of every opportunity one can get in life, adding that learners must put education first even if they may want to become farmers or entrepreneurs.
Mr Nshenda encouraged learners to take education seriously, set clear goals and choose careers according to their interest.
And Mununga Day Secondary School Head Boy Chipo Kunda said he is grateful to the school authorities for organising a careers’ day.
He said the event has given learners a clear picture of different professions.
“We are grateful for this day because we have learnt a lot from professionals from different departments,” he said.
Another grade 11 pupil, Kezia Wingabile said her dream of becoming a lawyer will be achieved as she has insight of what it takes to study law.
“Some of us will come back and show you that we have achieved what we learnt at this careers day,” she said.
And Evance Kolala, another grade 11 pupil said the careers day has opened his mind and made him understand what he will become in future.
“I want to be a police officer and I have learnt what it takes and what I should have in order to become one,” he said.
The Mununga Day Secondary school first ever careers day saw people from various government departments such as Agriculture, Health, Information, the judiciary, engineers from the local authority and others giving career talks to the learners.
Other people who spoke to the learners at the event were from the Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) and the Tanzania, Zambia Mafuta (TAZAMA) as well as engineers.
